BURNING-IN (or printing-in) is performed with card- board or a plastic device having a hole in it through which projected image may be locally exposed while rest of it is held back. Technique is used for giving more ex- posure to image areas that are denser than others in the negative. Burning-in device must be kept in constant move- ment to achieve a smooth blending of the image tones.

STRAIGHT print of tropical sunlighted scene is shown at top, opposite page. The print was exposed for the details in the shadow and middle tone areas with the sky and fore- ground details, therefore, being very badly washed out.

SKILLED printing-in technique reproduces the scene as it should be (below, opposite page). Note clouds in the sky area; improved detail in roof and foreground areas while middle tones and shadows have been maintained.

Flashing

Sometimes a negative will have an area that should be burned-in but due to the density of the area the printing-in method is not practical. For negatives of this type, a method known as flashing is more suitable. Strictly speaking, flashing is not exactly a "projection control" because the projected image is not used with this technique.

In flashing, we use extraneous light to expose parts of the print; the paper is

other reasonable large areas. Hold the light at a slant, away from the center of the picture and directed towards the edges of the print. Keep the light in motion at all times to achieve a smooth blending of tones.

The penlight is used for producing tone in small areas. In order to operate the penlight with directional accuracy, it should be held at right angles to the paper, not slanted, so that the light falls directly on the area to be darkened. Keep the light moving constantly.

It is occasionally desirable to have a solid black border on all sides of a print. The technique for doing this is relatively simple.

When you have determined the size of print you are going to make, take a piece of cardboard or heavy black paper and cut it to a size a bit smaller than the image of your print. In most cases, this will be about 1/4" narrower on the sides and top, and an extra 1/4" wide on the bottom for an 8x10" print. Larger prints should have slightly wider borders, but not exceeding 1/4 " on top and sides and 3/8" on the bottom.

deliberately fogged to produce a tone of grey or black in certain areas. Since the exposure is not made through the negative, there is no photographic detail to consider during this operation.

Small flashlights or a standard flashlight shielded with a black paper cone attached to it, provide a convenient and effective means for flashing the sensitive paper. Two flashlights should be on hand for this work. A typical two-cell hand-type flashlight is used to flash large areas and the sides of the print and a small pen-cell type is used for small areas.

These lights should be altered slightly to weaken and diffuse the light and shield it so that the beam does not spread. To weaken and diffuse the beam, cover the lens with one or two layers of plain white tissue paper. The intensity of the light should be reduced to the point that it will take about 10-seconds to produce a light grey tone on the photographic paper. You should make tests to pre-determne this kind of result so that when you have to use it, you will know from experience how and what to do.

An extension cone or tube arrangement should be taped to the larger flashlight to prevent light from spreading. The tube should extend a couple of inches beyond the lens of the flashlight. This larger flashlight should be used to flash the sides and corners of the print or
