What is more , modern lenses tend to give their best overall performance at an aperture of about two f / numbers larger than the smallest . Thus an f / 2.8 lens is likely to give its best sharpness at around f / 5.6 . Some people can hold a camera more nearly still than others and one's ability in this varies from one occasion to another . If the photographer has just scrambled up a steep hill he is unlikely to produce blur - free pictures at slowish shutter speeds until he has had a rest and is relaxed . A particularly exciting but ephemeral subject can give rise to nervous tension and this is the enemy of hand - held expo sures . Camera shake is particularly damaging when using a long focus lens as the magnitude of the blurring for a given movement of the camera is larger than with a short focus lens under the same conditions
