CB papers are warm-toned
Basically, the chlorobrom papers yield warm-toned images and the warmth of the image can be controlled by the addition of several drops of 10% solution of potassium bromide to the developer. This permits ex- tended development of the print image because the potassium bromide acts as a restrainer to prevent chemical fogging - and, the longer the development time, the warmer the image tones.
Chlorobromide papers are a favorite with many portrait studios due to the rich quality of the warm-toned images they yield. Years ago, when studios shot 8x10" negatives, it was a common practice to use chlorobrom papers for making contact prints which were magnificent in tonal range.
Fast CB papers are considerably slower than bromide emulsions but, faster than both chloride and the slower CB papers. Both types of the chlorobrom emulsions contain some silver iodide, as well. However, this is to be found more in the faster CB types.
The faster chlorobromide emulsions (about 1/4th to 1/3rd the speed of bromide emulsions), are in widespread use especially for high-quality projection printing requirements. Commercial prints, on the other hand, and prints intended for reproduction are usually made on bromide papers which are not as warm in image tone as the fast CB types. Reproduction processes demand crisp tones and good contrast while the warmer the tone of the image, the lower the maximum contrast obtainable with that paper.
