COLOUR ACCENT
While the previous pages showed deliberate composition with complementaries , any image that contains more than one hue automatically has within it colour relationships . We saw how certain proportions of opposed colours created a particular kind of harmony , but in contrast to this , a small spot of colour creates another kind of colour energy . The relationship between the hues is then less important than the great difference in the size of the coloured areas in the frame .
One of the most obvious and useful ways of using a colour accent is in a landscape or setting that is drab and lacks colour . Many urban and industrial views , particularly under cloudy skies , have this appearance . A single spot of colour - from a brightly - clothed passer - by or a bunch of flowers , for instance - will enliven the photograph . Whereas the overall drabness of the setting might provide no focus of attention , and even discourage you from taking a photo- graph , a bright colour accent will change the whole structure of the view . It attracts attention and provides a visual counterpoint to its surroundings .
Any essentially monochrome view has the potential for using a colour accent . Other scenes that have a uniformity of hue include snow - blanketed landscapes and long - distance shots of rolling green fields . Photographed like this , they may well have a monochromatic beauty that stands well alone . There may , in other words , be good reasons for not attempting to add a spot of colour . If , however , you do include a colour accent , it will change the nature of the image considerably . Warm , bright colours are usually the most effective - splashes of red , orange or yellow . Nevertheless , beware of cliches : for example , a red- jacketed figure in a landscape has been over - used .
The colour psychology involved in this type of composition is such that the colour accent often works best when very small . By occupying a tiny part of the frame , it becomes unexpected , and fights for attention more strongly than if it were larger . Bear this in mind when choosing a camera position and selecting the focal length of lens - a wide - angle lens may be more suitable because it takes in a broader panorama .
LEFT The dash of green in this shot is relatively unimportant if looked at in terms of its size in the frame , and yet the photograph would be lost without it . Imagine the picture without the small flash of colour ; the blue would look bland and lifeless .
ABOVE LEFT Here , three subjects have been employed to draw the eye from the drab grey - green of the rest of the scene ; the red bucket , the washing hanging up , and the bundle of clothes to the right . They interact to draw the eye from left to right .
LEFT AND BELOW LEFT Two scenes that would most probably not warrant a second look if it were not for the simple addition of a small burst of colour . With these examples , the photographer adjusted the composition of the photo to accommodate the colour accent .
