STRONG COLOUR
Perhaps because most everyday scenes tend to be subdued in colour , intense hues always attract attention . Unlike painting , in which the choice of colour and its richness is entirely under the artist's control , most photography is a matter of capturing scenes and incidents as they appear . The relative rarity of a flood of colour makes it a natural subject for the camera .
What makes a colour strong ? If the end - result is to be a photograph , there are a number of factors , and some of them offer the photographer choice . More than anything , however , colour intensity depends on how pure the hue is . Pure colours are not tainted with black , grey or white , and the purest of all are those that are not mixed with any others . Colour film itself works by mixing three pure coloured dyes - cyan , magenta and yellow . These are known as primary colours for just this reason - most other colours can be created by mixing them . Film chemistry , however , is slightly different from the eye's colour perception , and the three normally recognized primaries are red , yellow and blue .
When the two primary colours are mixed together equally , they produce a secondary colour . These too are rich and strong , although slightly less so than the primaries ; they are orange , green and violet . Further mixing makes for weaker hues . Now , in normal , straightforward photography there is little opportunity to create colours in this way , but the theory is important for know- ing where to look for them .
In nature , and on a large scale , there are very few strong colours - greens , browns and greys are much more common . One major exception is a clear blue sky , but for the most part you need to look in detail for vivid hues - in flowers , for example . Man - made colours are a much easier source and include , for example , brightly painted shopfronts , automobiles and hoardings .
ABOVE Although a secondary colour , being a mixture of cyan and magenta , pink still has sufficient strength to carry this flowery image .
ABOVE AND LEFT Pure hues prove irresistible for most photographers , as they tend to be untarnished by shades of grey or black . A reliable technique is to use a single strong colour to dominate the frame .
