GUIDELINES for FREELANCING
Should you shoot pictures on speculation ? How do you start a stock picture file ? How much equipment should you have ? Should you develop and print your own film - or , use a custom lab ? You'll find the answers to these and other questions about selling photos - here !
IT'S A FACT : Photographic markets are as close to you as your nearest mailbox or postoffice . You don't have to live in or near the big cities to be a successful freelance photographer these days Markets are everywhere .
Ozzie Sweet , one of the best known and most successful freelancers , lives hundreds of miles from New York in a small town in New Hamp shire . Peter Gowland's major markets for his pictures of sexy gals are more than 1500 miles away from his Santa Monica , California residence and studio .
As a freelancer you can operate successfully on your own as do Sweet and Gowland - or , you can work through an agent . You can , under certain circumstances , handle some accounts on your own and have an agency handle others for you .
The big factor in being successful is your ability to produce photographs that can be sold . You have to be able to determine what to photograph . You have to generate ideas for picture stories and articles and bring them into being so they can be offered to a market . In some instances , the same material may even be sold to several markets .
As a freelance photographer you have to be idea man , researcher , photographer , writer , dark room technician and mailing expert . You may be a one - man operation or you might team up with another photographer or a writer in fulfilling your efforts . Whatever your approach , you will have a hand in all phases of producing salable photography .
Equipment -- how much , what kind ?
While you should never go overboard on buying a lot of equipment which you will use only on rare occasions , you should make certain that you buy top quality cameras , lenses and accessories . Bargain - priced equipment generally proves to be a booby trap for the working professional because most equipment is made for the amateur photographer's needs rather than the hard wear and tear requirements of the pro . You have to have reliable tools to produce those images which be come your salable product .
Except for your initial investments in equip ment , don't buy any additional equipment except out of your earnings from photography . By re stricting yourself in this way , you will maintain a logical approach to securing only that equipment which will produce added income .
When and if you ever need some specialized equipment , rent it rather than buying it . Cameras , lenses and other accessories that lay on the shelf most of the time are a liability rather than an asset .
There is one accepted fact which must be ac knowledged : Cameras do break down and require repairs at times . This creates two situations need for a good repairman and having backup equipment .
No freelancer can cope with business with just one camera . If it should break down you are " un employed " until it is repaired and back in service . You cannot afford such a calamity . It is a nesessity that you have backup equipment available so you can always be ready to shoot !
Perhaps the simplist way of resolving this kind of a situation is to buy two identical camera bodies but only one set of lenses . You can work with both cameras with each one fitted with a different focal length lens so neither one will lay on the shelf . Then , if one camera should break down ( and it will be the body mechanism 99 times out of 100 ) , you still have the second one with which to work .
While some photographers do work with only one size film , most use both 35mm and 120. Some have the additional capability of 4x5 for color and specialized situations where the swings and tilts of a view camera or press / view type are essential . The types of subjects which you shoot will pretty much determine the equipment you require to best handle the work .
Remember , buy the best . It will pay off in the long run with dependability of service and top quality images . It is possible to produce salable pictures with a box camera but you certainly can't do it on a regular income - producing basis . The tools which you must use have to be capable of turning out the type and quality of work which your market will buy .
DRAMATIC accident shot is type papers buy . Chuck Anderson used broken windshield as frame .
