Amateur / Professional status
For the purpose of contest qualifications , an amateur is classified as a photographer who earns less than half his income from photography . A professional , accordingly , is an individual who derives a major portion or all of his income from photography . It is important to qualify yourself in the proper category where there are separate classifications for amateurs and professionals and unless otherwise specified , the above definitions apply .
Contestants are warned against the clause in some contest rules that no entries will be returned whether or not they win a prize . The reason for this rule , generally , is that the sponsor wishes to avoid the big chore and co - incidental headaches that go with the responsibility of returning prints and slides to contestants . This can be a costly undertaking and one in which contestants cause problems over lost or damaged photos .
The rule also has been used by some sponsors to get photos for free to be used for their own purposes . This becomes obvious when the rule is stated as being , " All entries become the property of the spon sor " . When you spot this rule , don't enter the con test for you stand to lose the rights to your own photographs .
Most legitimate sponsors will return non - winning entries if the contestant submits them with a self addressed stamped envelope . In no case should you submit the original negatives or transparencies in your entry . Keep the negatives in your files and have good duplicate slides or transparencies made from the originals and submit them . By doing this you will be protected from complete loss of your work .
