MARKETS with SPECIAL NEEDS
Each photo buyer has special needs for certain types of material , certain time factors or some other requirements which must be met in order to complete every successful transaction !
YOU MUST submit material to markets that You are of the kind of subject matter or style of presentation which they buy . If you submit pic tures or picture stories which do not fulfill the general needs of the market , you are not going to make a sale to that potential buyer .
and efforts There are many interesting requirements estab lished by various markets and you , the freelancer , must be cognizant of them so that you don't waste your time or money - or the photo buyer's time with work that does not fit the market's field or need . Each market is slightly different , some have very strong and definite lim itations such as the following requirements for Master , Mate & Pilot magazine , 39 Broadway , New York , N. Y. 10006 :
" Our exclusive interest is American deck officers shipmasters and their Chief , 2nd and 3rd navigation officers on American ships . No one else ! We'd like to see them " at work . " Candids preferred . . . "
Also acceptable for this publication are photos showing American ships on fire or in collision ( or assisting in rescue efforts involving these events ) ; Captains welcoming famous person alities aboard ; harbor welcomes for maiden both in the U. S. arrivals of American ships and throughout the world .
Shipboard scenes of heavy weather encountered on a trip are salable subjects , too . The magazine also goes for some glamour subjects but they " must be posed on a ship with a piece of ship's gear something to do with navigation ( like a sextant , binoculars , etc. ) No beach scenes are bought but sailboat glamour sometimes makes the grade . "
Advance queries from photographers in port cities are invited . Captions must be furnished for all photos identifying each individual , his rating and his ship !

Rates are set on an individual basis according to the complexity of the assignment .

They should be pretty , full of expres sion and sexy . The model should be wearing ap propriate clothing for the season for which it is submitted and color is to be submitted 5 months in advance of publication date . Head , three quarter and full figure shots are acceptable .
Cropping must allow for logo or type on top and coverlines down the left side of the color shot . Payment of $ 200 is made for cover shots accepted ; 35mm , 24x24 and 4x5 transparency sizes all being Okay .
Quick submission of material is essential because of the nature or the frequency of the publication in some cases . Front Page Dectective magazine and Inside Dectective magazines , 750 Third Ave. , New York , N. Y. 10017 buy pictures and stories relating to current crimes or picture stories on late developments in law enforcement . Photos on current - breaking crimes must be sent in fast ! "
While the foregoing magazines are published monthly , National Catholic Reporter , P. O. Box 281 , Kansas City , Mo. 64141 is a weekly newspaper so time is important in submitting pictures on that basis . The publication seeks pictures of social problems : war and peace , civil rights , poverty

On the other hand , The New England Guide , P.O. Box 108 , Concord , N. H. 03301 is published annually and photos should only be submitted in March of each year . The magazine uses scenic views , historic sites , boats of all sorts and many other subjects related to the New England scene and activities .
Some publications and markets like to work with one size film . Thirty - five millimeter is stressed by Missouri Pacific Lines Magazine , Rm . 200 , Missouri Pacific Bldg . , St. Louis Mo. 63103 . They are interested in strictly antique car features , how - to restoration material and Salons on specific old cars . These usually rate a cover tie - in . The editor , incidentally cautions , " Be sure to watch backgrounds when shooting old cars and do not include items such as modern cars , telephone wires , etc. These date the picture . "
