MAKE SUBJECT RELAX
The experienced photographer knows that the inexperienced person is going through this torture and will either snap off a few pictures very quickly or will shoot the first few pic tures with no film in the camera . Then again , soft music from a hi - fi system will help . Talking about the subject tends to ease the situation , too .
You can talk about the good fea tures of the subject , convince them they will photograph well . Tell them they have good eyes , a fine nose , well formed mouth . Or - it might be the hair , hands or the legs . As you dis cuss the particular feature , photo graph it with your camera , concentrate interest on that feature .
As you do , the subject will feel the same confidence that you have to be able to bring out that feature . This will help you to get the best possible pictures of the eyes , mouth , hands , legs , etc. When this feeling takes place in the subject , the photographer also feels the excitement and the pictures start happening .
In order to work fast and record the quick moods of a person , you must have your technique down pat so you don't have to lose a lot of time worry ing about lighting , exposure and cam era . As far as cameras go , you can work faster with a 35mm than most anything else because there are 36 frames in each loading and the film can be advanced rapidly with one stroke .
UMBRELLA strobe was key light for portrait at right which was shot with window in background , behind model .
The camera size you use will de pend upon the subjects you photo graph . If your model's are young and have a perfect complexion , 35mm will work . If your subjects are older and you have to sell them prints , you will probably find it difficult to do so without retouching - and , retouching 35mm is out of the question . There are ways of retouching on the print but if a number of prints are to be involved from the same negative , it will be best to use a larger camera for the sitting .
About the smallest practical size for retouching on the negative is 24x 24. The 4x5 is better . With 4x5 or 24x24 you may not be able to crank off as many pictures as with 35mm . You may not be able to get as many expressions but you will be able to flatter the person much more with a little retouching here and there .
USING THE PROPER LENS
In portraiture , using the proper focal length lens is important . Most all lenses , except the very short focal lengths , can be used - providing you work from the proper distance from the subject so as to avoid distorting the face . The normal focal length lens on your camera can be used for por traits providing the camera is not too close to the subject .
A " normal " lens ( 50mm on 35mm film ; 75 or 80mm on 24 " film ) , will work for half - length portraits but when you want a large head on your negative , moving in closer will fill the
frame but the nose will balloon for ward larger than normal while the ears recede into the background . In brief , the face will be all out of shape .
How do you get a large face image on the film without having to move in closer ? Simple - with a longer focal length lens . On 35mm a lens of 90 to 135mm will give you a good portrait . With the 120 formats , lenses of 150
-250mm will give you a large head image without distortions . On 4x5 " film the 10 - inch lens should be the choice although lenses up to 360mm will be fine .
DRAMATIC lighting effect achieved at right is diagrammed above . An umbrella strobe was front light with bare strobe bulb behind her head .
