Planning a close - up studio
Providing the lighting is kept simple , you do not need a spacious studio for taking close - up photographs . They can be taken anywhere inside - on a small table , a bench or even a windowsill . You can use available light from a window to light plants or cut flowers : tungsten halogen spotlights to boost the light on stationary subjects : or small electronic flashes to arrest moving insects or tropical fish . Many of the lighting techniques illus trated in this book were set - up on a spacious table in my kitchen , because my garden studio has no central heating .
Once you start to experiment with lighting , however , a small table is no longer adequate for supporting the lights , reflectors and diffusers , and if you are doing a lot of close - up photography , it will be much easier if a separate room however small - can be used as a studio .
As with any functional area , the design of a studio should not be rushed . Since each photographer evolves his own style and favors his own particular equipment , it is invariably a mistake faithfully to reproduce another photo grapher's studio . While there are several essential items every photographer re quires , the positioning of electric power points , benches and sinks is a matter of personal choice . Only by using a studio for a while will you know what is most convenient for you .
My own studio has fixed benches and some free - standing tables which can be pulled out into the center of the room so that it is easier to light the subject from any direction . The advantage of the fixed benches is that when they are fitted flush with the wall , apparatus does not fall down the back . I keep space beneath some benches so a stool can be stowed and so that the front tripod leg is not obstructed when the camera is flush with the front of the bench . Cupboards , drawers and shelves can be built beneath benches for storing additional equipment.
Not long ago , studio floors were fes tooned with snaking electric cables : but now overhead gantry systems allow lights to be suspended from the ceiling so the floor is free of cables , except when a low - level light is required .
Overhead lighting track
The Bowens Hi - glide light track system provides smooth - running overhead lighting . If studio flashes , such as the Multiblitz Minilite ( see p . 159 ) , are suspended from a counterbalanced lifting system , their height can quickly be adjusted and maintained at the level required for each lighting set - up .
Wet bench All
water and liquids should be confined to one area , preferably a complete bench with a laminated top . A sink provides a source of water and a place to wash up dirty containers . On the other end of the bench is an aquarium .
Ring flash
The Quadmatic ringlite flash is one accessory in the close - up system .
Light table
A light table , consisting of a metal framework which supports a curved sheet of flexible , white , opaque plexiglass , provides a continuous translucent background for lighting glassware from below . Beneath the table is an electrically powered flash with barn door attachments .
Fiber optics
I keep my fiber optics unit adjacent to the microscope so I can use the flexible arms for lighting close - ups or photomicrographs .
Using a light tent
A light tent is necessary for diffusing direct light sources used to illuminate highly reflective porcelain or metallic objects . If the object does not inside a commercial diffuser such as those illustrated on p . 153 , you can make a three or four - sided light tent using either rigid white opal plexiglass , Kodatrace sheet or even tracing paper .
Wild stereo microscope
When viewing and photographing a subject under a microscope , it is much more comfortable to sit on a stool . This microscope and the exposure meter both have to be plugged into the electricity .
Small accessories box
I use a fisherman's tackle box for storing small items such as stave units , extension leads , flash ball and socket headscissors , string and tape so that they are always readily available - both in the studio and on location .
Aquarium
Before filling an aquarium with water make sure that it has no leaks , and that the table bench is strong enough to support it full of water .
Noticeboard
I have always been a compulsive list maker , so l regard a noticeboard as essential Here I pin up ideas for pictures . requests from picture editors as well as reminders of deadline dates for specific commissions . When I am working on a book , the board is enlivened with color proofs.
