Toning
Treating black and white prints with chemical toners changes the black silver image to a single color . Toning a portrait to create an overall color image is a technique that can produce striking results .
While black and white pictures are usually viewed in a cool , logical manner , we respond to color in an emotional way . Color always pro vokes a more spontaneous , sensuous response . And particular colors are often sub - consciously associated with different feelings or moods . For example , green may evoke thoughts of joy , youth and spring , red brings to mind fire and anger , and blue may be associated with ice , water , or calm . Bear these qualities in mind .
when you plan to tone a picture , and always try to choose a color that matches the mood of the image . Sepia toners , for example , are parti cularly suited to romantic studies or portraits of older people , and you can also use them effectively to give a period mood to a picture .
When choosing a toner , you must take into consideration the fact that while a portrait presented in a specific color may produce the desired emotional response , when people see the human face - usually associated with flesh tones - in a vivid , unnatural color they may find it disconcerting or even shocking . You should therefore use toning with caution , and only when it is really appropriate .
Blue toner
I tinted this portrait of an artist in blue . I felt that this color created a mood which suited the graphic qualities of the subject's painting in the background . Mamiyaflex C3 , 80 mm , 1/60 sec at f8 , Tri - X .
Using bright colors Toner kits such as the one made by Colorvir are generally best suited to portraits of young people . Here , a set of pictures of one subject has been toned in different colors to form a series . Colorvir kits ( see p . 162 ) also contain pseudo - solarization chemicals which you can use in daylight to create unusual effects , far left . Nikkormat FT . 50 mm . 1/125 sec at f8 , FP4 .
