Filters and attachments
Rather than place it directly in front of the lens , I set the attachment on a tripod and photo graphed my subject reflected in it . Another alternative is to attempt to shoot through the filter whilst holding it at an angle .
The way that you use a double exposure device is entirely dependent on your own imagination . There is no reason why it should always be used in a serious way . Double masks are , in fact , ideally suited to comic effects . Some filters , such as starburst gratings or color filters , make only a slight change to the picture , perhaps increasing its impact . Used in this way , the filters become a secondary feature of the image , and the danger of repeating the effect for its own sake is reduced .
When using special effects filters and attach ments you must be aware of the fact that they tend to produce very similar results , and that , after a while , they may lose their novelty value and become merely repetitious . The more pro nounced and unusual the effect , the quicker it tends to become a mere gimmick . For this reason , it is best to use the more " extreme " filters and attachments in moderation , applying them only where they will be most effective .
◄ Using a starburst filter A good star effect is not easy to create because you need a concentrated light source in the image . I used a well - lit jewel to reflect rays of light , and rotated the filter until I achieved the optimum effect . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm , 1/15 sec at f11 . Tri - X .
Double mask effect A double mask allows you to take two exposures side by - side on one frame of film . I made my own , with a jagged join so that the two halves of the image fitted together well . Pentax 6x7 , 90 mm , 1/15 sec at f16 , Tri - X .
Using a multi - image filter There are several types of multi - image filter available . Some varieties have colored segments , others are plain , as here . And you can choose between a different number of facets , giving three , five or seven images , for example . If you rotate the filter in its mount you will see that each small movement alters the effect quite considerably .
