يعتبر الناي من أهم الآلات الموسيقية الشعبية المنتشرة على نطاق واسع في أرجاء الوطن العربي لسهولة صنعه ويحتل الناي مكانة مرموقة في الفرق الشعبية والتخت الشرقي على حد سواء وقد أُخذت
عنه كل آلات النفخ الغربية.
والناي عبارة عن قصبة محوفة ومهذبة تهذيباً صناعياً خاصاً ويتم العزف على الناي بوضع فتحتـه العليا على الفم وضعاً مائلاً بحيث يمس جزء منه جزء
من من الشفتين ويكون الجزء الأكبر من فتحة النـاي بعيـداً عـن الشفتين وبذلك يتـم اصطدام الهواء المنطلق من الفم عند النفخ بهذا الجزء فيتم الحصول على الصوت المطلوب. والناي مفتوح من الطرفين وهناك صفٌ من الثقوب من الأمام وثقب واحد الخلف، والنفخ القوي يحدث صوتاً حاداً والنفخ الضعيف يُحدث صوتاً منخفضاً ويسمى الناي عادة باسم الصوت المنخفض به ولكل ناي طبقة صوتية تختلف حسب طوله لذلك نرى أن عازف الناي يحمل معه عدّة نايات وبلا شك أن جميع آلات النفخ الغربية المصنوعة من فكرة آلة الناي أيضاً فيها الكبير والصغير وبعضها يختلف عن بعضها في طبقات الصوت حسب حجمه.

The flute is a curved reed that has been refined with a special artificial method. The flute is played by placing its upper opening over the mouth in an inclined position such that part of it touches part of the flute.
From the lips, the largest part of the flute opening is away from the lips. Thus, the air released from the mouth when blowing collides with this part, and the desired sound is obtained. The flute is open on both sides, and there is a row of holes in the front and one hole in the back. Strong blowing produces a sharp sound, and weak blowing produces a low sound. The flute is usually called the low sound in it, and each flute has a pitch that varies according to its length. Therefore, we see that the flute player carries with him several flutes, and there is no doubt that All Western wind instruments made from the idea of the flute also have large and small ones, and some differ from each other in sound pitches depending on their size.
