FEATURE PICTURES
The feature picture differs in a number of important respects from the straight news picture . The first and usually the most obvious point of difference insofar as the press photographer is concerned is that the feeling of immediacy is gone . With but few exceptions , a news picture reports what is going on now or what has gone on so recently that it is still newsworthy . The press photographer who brings in a picture of yesterday's happenings is wasting his time . A feature picture does not have this strong sense of time - it is timeless in that it could have happened last week , today or next year without any diminution of its effectiveness . The feature picture relies heavily on its subject matter rather than on its news value .
The feature picture may be complete in itself , and in that respect , it is similar to a news picture , but quite often it is part of a series , each telling part of the overall story . The story need not be particularly new or important . Anything having a strong element of human interest will do . Some likely subjects are children playing in a school playground , a dog taking care of its litter of puppies , a mailman making his rounds , animals in the zoo , or a street in the rain . These are all simple and ordinary subjects and they have been used many many times to produce charming feature pictures . However , the fact that the subject itself is commonplace does not mean that the pictures have to be commonplace . If they are , the photographer has failed in his objective .
Fishing is a highly popular sport and is , therefore , a very fertile field for the photographer in search of a good feature picture , whether it is winter ( above ) or summer ( below ) .
The Park in Winter . A good pictorial shot such as this makes a good feature picture , particularly around Christmas time .

The pictures must present any subject whether commonplace or interesting in an original and creative manner so that they take on a fresh appeal and fresh interest . The trick is to be able to see old subjects in a new light . Avoid the trite approach . Look , instead , for a gimmick or a peg on which to hang the story so that it is somehow different . Of course , if you do come up with a new and unusual subject , so much the better . For example , a very successful series of feature pictures were built around the idea of benches in a city . The pictures showed benches of all types , new as well as old , picnic benches in the park , old benches on the beach , benches in the morning and benches in the evening , benches with old people and benches with young couples . Here the subjects were ordinary but the idea on which the story was built was new and the series was highly successful because the photographer was able to get this feeling of the unusual into his pictures .
Underwater photography is a rather specialized field , but it does offer excellent picture possibilities .

In photo graphing water skiers , you can either get close up for the action or far ther back for the pictorial effect if the scenery is truly beauti ful as it is here .

Feature pictures don't have to meet a daily deadline , so the photographer generally has more time to plan and to shoot . When making a series of feature pictures for an assignment , use that time to good advantage . Look for interesting lighting and , if necessary , supply your own lighting . Work for interesting composition . This is a strong force in any good picture , and we have mentioned it many times throughout this course of study , but its importance cannot be overemphasized . Keep each picture simple and establish a good center of interest . Build up this center of interest by such devices as framing , balancing , or the use of leading lines . Sometimes you can improve a picture by imparting a particular mood , such as sunrise , sunset , fog , high key or low key . Try fresh and interesting camera angles or points of view . You can be much more original in a feature picture than in a straight - forward news shot .
