It is surprising how many of our best commercial photographers started out as amateurs . As their proficiency grew , so did their interest in photography as a career . A logical means of bridging the gap from amateur to professional is through the sale of photographs made on a free - lance basis . This is a way that is open to any student of this course , and it is for this reason that we are devoting the remainder of this Assignment to the field of travel photography .
Most of you have traveled at some time or other . Generally such travels are to vacation spots , and you have come home with a collection of photographs either in black - and - white or in color . Such photographs are saleable if they have sufficient technical excellence and tell a good story . Possible purchasers are newspapers , magazines , and travel book publishers or editors , not to mention producers of art calendars . Many commercial photographers still make it a point to look for interesting material on their vacations with the thought in mind of selling such pictures .

The subjects photographed during your travels or on a vacation trip are usually the kind that are not dated , and so are just as valuable years after they were taken as when new . Such photographs may be sold more than once and , therefore , can become a source of repeated income . Many photographers build up a stock of such photographs and derive considerable income from them over at period of years . As a matter of fact , many commercial photographers who find this type of picture taking both interesting and rewarding have gradually switched their activities into this field and become travelogue lecturers on a permanent and professional basis .
As a student photographer , you should not overlook any feasible means of enlarging your knowledge of all phases of photography which might prove of value to you . Travel pictures not only provide a possible means of enhancing your income , but they give added interest and zest to your travels . There is nothing like a good series of photographs of any vacation trip to refresh your memory and re - create the wonderful times you had .

When you visit new city , a new country , or a new vacation area in your travels , you bring with you a keen sense of interest and excitement . You are more . than usually aware of everything going on about you and your reactions are stronger and more meaningful . Let all this work for you . Try to discipline yourself so as to understand and take advantage of your reaction . Capture the feeling the mood - of everything you see and get this into your pictures . Your job is to re - create in your pictures the sights and to some extent the sounds about you the basic meaning of the place you are in and your reaction to it . If you can manage to capture these things in your photographs , they will be successful , and they will sell .
Don't be carried away by your enthusiasm , however . Discipline and control is of the utmost importance . A beautiful mountain range glowing in the light of the rising or setting sun may thrill you , but if it is too far away and you are shooting in black - and - white , your picture will show nothing but a tiny row of hills . way off in the distance completely lost in the disarray of a lot of tangled scenery . You must be able to translate what you see with your own eyes into what the camera will record and act accordingly . Study and re - study the Assignment on composition and be sure to rely heavily on all the ideas and suggestions it gives you for the making of successful pictures . We will , from time to time , refer to some points of composition in this Assignment as a general review of the subject , but such a review will necessarily be incomplete .
