تعتبرالانارة الخارجية ، عنصر ضروري لأي حديقة ، وذلك لإظهـار وإبراز جمال الحديقة و العناصر الأخرى الموجودة في خـارج محيط المبنى أو تـخـدم النواحي الأمنية وذلك لتحقيق الأمن لأهل البيت والإشعار بوجود سكان داخل السكن . و يمكن الاعتماد على العديد من التقنيات المختلفة في تصميم الإنارة الخارجيـة ، و تكمـن الاختلافات في وضعية مصـادر الإنارة و اتجاهاتها إنارة موجهة إلى الأعلى وبها تحصل على إنارة شاعرية للغاية عادة ما تكون الإنارة غاطسة في الأرضيـة أو البساط العشبي . و يستخدم هذا النوع من الإنارة في إبراز شجرة كبيرة أو على واجهة المسكن لإبراز احد التفاصيل المعمارية فيه .. إنارة موجهة إلى الأسفل و هي إنارة تركب في الأعلى بحيث تنتشر و تغطي منطقـة ما ء لمداخل و مخـارج المسكن أو للحديقة الخلفية بحيث تخدم النواحي الأمنية . كما أنها مناسبة لإضاءة أحواض الزهور لأن الزهور تميل للاتجاه نحو الأعلى
