بات الحفاظ على البيئة أمرا ضروريا .. لا بل واجباً علينا نحن البشر ، دونه نرسم نهاية كوكبنا بأيدينا ، وبات التنبيه لذلك شيئا هاماً ، خاصة للأشخاص غير المهتمين بالبيئة أو أولئك الذين يفضلون ربحهم على حياتهم و حياة أولادهم وأحفادهم . من حسن الحظ جاء العديد من المدافعين عن البيئة كي يحذرونا ، طارحين حلولاً للحفاظ على سلامتها ، ومنهاالعمارة البيئية أو الخضراء أو المستدامة ، كلها تسميات لمفهوم واحد ، حيث تعتبر العمارة الخضراء أو المباني والمدن الصديقة للبيئة أحد الاتجاهات الحديثة في الفكر المعماري الذي يهتم بالعلاقة بين المباني والبيئة . للوصول لمفهوم العمارة الخضراء أو العمارة الصديقة للبيئة يجب مراعاة عدم الاعتماد
بشكل كلي على الأجهزة الاصطناعية ، سـواء في مجال التكييف أو الإضـاءة والسعي لتوظيف الجانب البيئي الطبيعي في التهوية والإنارة .. وبالتالي تحقيق وفر مالي و فوائد بيئية وصحية تنعكس ايجابيا على البيئة والإنسان ، كما أن الزيادة في أعداد السكان يعني أن المساهمة البيئية والعمرانية الخضراء ستزداد . فالعمارة الخضراء تسهم في المحافظة على الأنظمة الحيوية ، كونها تقلل من الانبعاثات الغازية ، وتخفض نسب التلوث ، كما أنها تسهم في المحافظة على الجمال الطبيعي وتغرس قيم الجمال البيئي في نفوس الأفرد ، حتى إنها تشعرهم بالرضا والـراحـة النفسية ، حيث أثبتت دراسة أمريكية أن الموظفين الذين يعملون في أبنية صديقة للبيئة ينتجون أكثر من غيرهم . وهكذا فإن العمارة البيئية هي إحدى الوسائل لحماية البيئة ، ولو طبق العالم تلك الوسيلة لضمنا مستقبلاً أفضل لكوكبنا ، وقد ينعم أطفالنا بحياة منعشة .. عكس ما كنا نتوقع
