Converting photo to sketch
Some special effects have definite practical applications aside from purely illustrative purposes which makes them worth your careful consideration. You can make a photo- graph into a line drawing by using a crowquill pen and waterproof India ink. Simply outline all of the detail in a photograph with the pen in ink.
Be sure all important details are drawn in. Once the image has been sketched in over the photograph and has dried, soak the print in a strong solution of Farmer's Reducer. The image will bleach out leaving only the ink rendition. The bleached print should then be rewashed and dried.
Another method of producing a line, plus middle tones, rendition of a photograph is by the bas relief technique. This is an interesting process whereby a slightly thin positive on film is made from a negative, by contact printing. A continuous tone film should be used for making the positive and the film should be developed, fixed, washed and dried in the normal manner.
When dried, the negative and positive should be sandwiched together, slightly out-of- register, so that an outline can be seen around the elements of the composition. When printed, the effect appears almost three-dimensional with areas of middle tones boldly outlined in a black edging. Many variations of the bas-relief effect can be obtained by carrying the steps of negative/positive to a second and third stage, by making different combinations of the films and changing the amount of mis-register between the films in the sandwich.
