In recent years cameras have become easier to use. Auto- matic exposure control systems now ensure that negatives and slides are the right density except in the most difficult lighting circumstances. Viewfinders have become larger and more accurate and the ground glass screen or coupled rangefinder focusing now fitted to the best cameras makes it more certain that pictures will be sharp in the right places. There are now cameras with which even focusing is automa- tic. At the same time modern high-speed films allow excel- lent picture quality under the most unpromising conditions.

This book describes the equipment and materials avail- able; how to select the most appropriate, and use them to their best advantage. This leads to economy of both cash and time and helps you take pictures which please you and others.

Although modern cameras are very easy to use their simplicity of operation is brought about by complexity of mechanical design supplemented, in many cases, by soph- isticated electronic circuitry. These pages give insight into such matters so that the reader will be able to take full advantage of the technical help they give and to devote thought fully to what photography is all about - turning ideas into compelling pictures.
