INTRODUCTION
As mentioned in the former edition, the Recent Dictionary, has been compiled to meet the need of School, offices and homes. It is also designed for those who need a simple, accurate, up to date dictionary as an aid in acquiring a better working acknowledge of the English Language.
Frankly speaking, When we were asked by the publishers to under- take the work of compiling translating a dictionary, we have no idea of the formidable nature of the task that lay before us. It was obvious and logical, of course, that a very great deal would have to be done to bring up to date a dictionary of a living Language, such as English into Arabic.
Then in the course of the years, during which we have engaged upon the work, we found that it assumed proportions altogether undreamt of, and that we were virtually producing a new work.
Our first aim is that the print is large enough and clear for a dic- tionary so that you can read it as easily as possible.
Other aim we had in compiling this dictionary, is to compress in its volume more livings words and expressions than are contained in other similar dictionaries.
This new edition has been revised augmented with more words and more meanings, in order to meet the modern development of the En- glish Language.
THE VOCABULARY
The words selected for inclusion in this dictionary will meet also the needs of the student's studies in at the University scientific, technical word have been kept to a minimum, although a great deal will be found besides many slang colloquial words and expressions.
Some Latin, French, American and some other foreign words are included, and each word of these is followed by a capital letter - such as L, F. or U.S.A. indicating its source.
ILLUSTRATIONS
This dictionary contains about (2000) two thousand illustrations, many of which can convey the desired meaning at a glance.
Two or more full illustrated pages are attached to each letter sho- wing groups of different types of things, animals or peoples. These illus- trations keep the work more bright and readable than some other ditiona- ries, as a picture explains through the eye in an instant many things that cannot be explained in words.
Many slang words are indicated in the flow of the dictionary. It is important that students should know what is slang, what isn't; so that they can avoid its use when slang is wholly out of place. In this dictionary, of course, slang words are indicated to be such.
PRONUNCIATION
The Recent Dictionary fulfils its function when it shows you how to pronounce the word. Each word is followed by its pronunciation. Here I have employed a system of simplified spelling, which in most respects is easy to grasp at sight.
Numbers are used to show you the correct Pronunciation which you will find as easy as possible when you make yourself familiar with its rules that are mentioned in the few coming pages. These you will find the key of pronunciation with examples indicating the work of special numbers.
Words that have the same pronunciation and different meanings are followed by abbreviations showing what parts of speech each word is; viz: The word produce is shown thus:
Produce (5-185), N,
Produ ce (5-185), V,
These two words have the same pronunciation, but are of different meanings. In order to show this difference, I have added the Letter <<N>>> for nouns and the Letter <<V >> for verbs.
Some other words have different meaning and different pronun- ciation, such as the words <progress>> and <«read». They are shown as follows:
Progress (6-72), N,
Progress (9-2), V,
IDIOMS
A feature of the dictionary is that when a word is familiary used in a special term of expression; an idiomatic phrase, the work is followed by a dash (), in order to avoid its repetition then the other words of the idiom or expression, such as the words <<card, effect and make >> which are shown as follows:

to show one's - S,
to throw up the S,
<<< effect >»,
to go into,
to take,
<< make >>,
to - away with oneself.
to - up one's mind.
And many other idioms and expressions.
DEFINITIONS
Arabie definitions are given strictly and carefully, showing the exact meaning for the correct usage of words. A great care has been taken to make the definitions as concise as possible and yet include their essential and common uses.
Scientific words which have the meaning in Arabie are put within parentheses to show that the word is not pure Arabic but arabicized.
CAPITALIZATION
The dictionary is followed by an appendix including some defined proper names. These names include Persons of whom a brief characteri- zation of nationality and profession is given, with date of birth and (if dead) of death; and geographical names, as of continents, countries, cities, islands, mountains, rivers etc...
On the whole a great amount of valuable biographical, historical and geographical informations is supplied; with a general map of the world, and the expressions which has been decided by the conference of UNESCO.
TABLES
A number of valuable tables are shown at the end of the dictio- nary. They include weights and measures (Showing a full exposition of the metric system), coins, plants and stars with illustration.
COMPOUNDING
The system of compounding words adopts a hyphen to distinguish hyphenated common words, as dining room, eye-glass, printing-press, etc... from compounds in which words are united without the hyphen, as black- board, bookman, coachman, sunbean etc...
