Useful accessories
The difficulty in choosing accessories is knowing what you can afford to do without . In various parts of this book we have looked at tripods ( see p . 34 ) ; close - up attachments and filters ( see pp . 100-3 , 156 ) and flash see p . 112 ) . The accessories shown right and below are often overlooked but are all useful in various ways .
An " ever - ready " camera case is almost a necessity . It protects the camera , yet keeps it ready for use at a moment's notice . Protec- tion is also necessary for any additional lenses . They can be kept in their original padded cases or perspex lens boxes and stored loose in a gadget bag . Or you can fit caps and keep them in an outfit case like the one shown right .
So much photographic equipment today is run from batteries meters , flash , auto- winders , and so on that it is helpful to carry a spare battery of each type . The life and use of some battery types are shown at the bottom of the page . You must also carry materials for cleaning dust or hairs from lenses , see below .
When choosing a case for a complete outfit , think carefully before you buy any- thing expensive - looking which may attract thieves . An airline - type soft bag with a shoulder strap , or a fitted case which cannot be distinguished from an ordinary business attache case , is often a wiser practical choice .

Camera and lens care
The most common causes of damage and poor performance of equipment are dirt , water , and condensation . Check that the film compartments of your camera are clean and that the shutter works each time you load a new film . From time to time tighten any external screws on the camera they tend to become loose as a result of vibration .
Always keep lens caps on both ends of lenses when they are not in use . Protect the lens on the camera with an ultra - violet filter or a dust cap when you are not using the camera . Most small hairs and dust particles on the glass surface can be removed by puffing air from a blower brush . Blow and brush any debris toward the rim of the lens and remove it with a cotton bud or lens cleaning tissue .
A lens marked with dried - out rain splashes should be gently wiped with a cleaning cloth moistened with lens cleaning fluid . Condensation on a lens should be allowed to evaporate as the camera warms up .
Motor drives and autowinders
Motor drives and autowinders auto- matically wind - on film after each exposure . A motor drive will fire the shutter and wind - on for a pre- set number of exposures or work continuously . The cheaper auto- winder simply winds on rapidly after each manually fired exposure . This is usually just as useful , more controllable , and less wasteful of film than a motor drive .
