FRANK HERRMANN : Photojournalism and portraiture
Frank Herrmann is a British photojournalist , perhaps best - known for his portrait studies .
As a newspaper photographer , Herrmann is bound by the brief he is given and by the restrictions of the printed page . For instance , the single newspaper column requires a vertical format for his portraits . But where space permits a larger , 2 or 3 column horizontal picture , more detail and context can be incorporated . Herrmann's pictures tend to be bold and simple in structure with a minimum of detail . In photojournalism content is of primary importance - the picture with the most information and impact will always tend to take precedence over a more subtle , well - composed shot .
The nature of a photojournalist's job also restricts the equipment he uses . Elaborate studio lighting , large format cameras and tripods are out of the question for most journalistic assignments where timing and speed are essential . For most portraits Herrmann uses a normal or long focus lens and existing lighting , sometimes with flash . Long lenses are particularly useful as they allow him to take close - ups without any distortion , from a fairly distant view point , and their shallow depth of field separates the subject from any distracting elements in the background .
Bishop of Woolwich ( 1966 )
In the picture below Herrmann has produced a strong , tightly cropped image for a newspaper page which would still work well if reproduced small . The head was lit from two different light sources giving a fine tonal range and shadow detail . Information such as the ring and white collar is included , without appearing contrived .
Orson Welles
Herrmann's timing and choice of viewpoint were crucial in the portrait below . Backlighting and unsharp focus simplified the image and , combined with the over- exposed background , produced a strong silhouette .
Duncan Grant
The artist Duncan Grant's cluttered home , and his self - portrait as a young man , contribute both character and contextual detail in the picture below right . Pose and lighting have been carefully con- sidered to match Grant's painting .
