ROLPH GOBITS : Using the setting
Rolph Gobits is a young Dutch photo- grapher who is establishing himself in fashion and reportage work .
fashion assignments , Gobits uses relevant , existing interiors instead of a studio reconstruction to enhance a model He relates color schemes and lighting architecture and furnishings , to the style of the garments concerned . In his reportage work he again integrates people with their normal environment .
Gobit's pictures are carefully composed , without appearing in any way unnatural or contrived . If the subject is positioned off- center , it is always perfectly balanced by line , objects , and colors in the composition . This harmony is increased by his use of simple linear divisions of the picture frame , and his range of rich pastel colors . One of the most important features of Gobits ' work is the care he takes to include only those elements that will add to the composi- tion of a picture . There is never a clutter of unwanted detail to detract from the strength of his simple compositions Gobits mostly uses a 2 ins square camera , and prefers soft directional lighting either diffused daylight or a studio type electronic flash , bounced from a large reflector . This lighting gives a very wide tonal range from highlight to deep shadow , and Gobits uses the resulting lighting con- trast to emphasize specific areas of a photo- graph . Shadow often provides an important foil to detailed highlight areas .
Woman on stairway
In the picture , right , the diagonal line of the stairway divides the balanced shadow and highlight areas . The model is brightly il- luminated by a large electronic flash unit at the top of the stair- way . A smaller lamp provides fill- in lighting from the left of the camera position .
Seated man
The picture , below , is illuminated by two windows . One , to the right of the camera , sidelights the face . The other window , top left , gives soft , fill - in lighting . The subject's off - center position is balanced by the position of this window .
Three fishermen
The symmetrical positioning of the three fishermen , below , is empha- sized by the natural lighting . Shadows and highlights divide the faces . The lighting ( from the left of the camera ) picks out the straight lines of the walls and the table top , partially framing the men .
Sleeping model
Bounced electronic flash illumin- ates the Art - Deco scene above . The model's face and arms are set strongly against the deep shadow of the lower left part of the picture .
Her reclining body echoes the curve of the bronze figure . Again Gobits structures his composition using line . The horizontal lines of the furniture and mirror balance the vertical lines of the room .
