Adding a print surround
A cardboard mat , or surround , protects the print and makes it more durable as well as providing a frame .
You should choose the color and propor- tions of your surround carefully . Ideally the cardboard should be a subdued color , per- haps a gray or pale brown , so as not to " compete " with your image .
Mark out the picture dimensions on the center of the card . Carefully cut this area out using a straight edge and a sharp trim- ming knife . If you can , hold the blade sloping at 45 ° toward the print surface , to give a beveled edge to the " window " . Push out the unwanted card and carefully remove any burrs remaining in the corners . You should attach the print to the underside of the mat with adhesive tape .

Once a print has been mounted you can frame it , with or without a mat . You do not have to use glass in the frame , but you must add a rigid backing to the print in addition to the card mount . As shown above , a frame can be simply made by using clips to clamp the print between a backing board and a sheet of glass .
Frame kits can be bought from artists ' supply stores . They include metal or wood frames with mitered corners that you assemble with screws or catches .
