Double printing
Double printing means exposing two nega- tives , one after the other , on to the same sheet of printing paper . This is a much more flexible technique than sandwiching because you are printing each image separately . As a result the density , size , and position of each image can be controlled .
Select two negatives that relate well in perspective , lighting , and densities so that one paper grade will suit both . Make a test strip for each negative to determine the exposure . It helps to use two enlargers so that you can load one negative in each carrier , and then transfer the paper from one easel to the other . But with care you can manage well with one , as shown below .
Print from the first negative
Print from the second negative
Making a double exposure print
1. Position the first negative in the enlarger . Place a piece of card the same size as your paper on the baseboard . Mark on it the area of the first negative you do not want included in the print .
2. Cut out the marked area from the card . This shape will be used for shading the first negative . The other piece of card will be used for shading when you print the second negative .
3. Expose the first negative shading the area you want left out with the first piece of card . Remove the paper and mark the top of the image . Replace the paper .
4. With the other negative in position make a second expo- sure . This time , use the second piece of card to shade the area that was exposed during the first exposure .
Double printed image
The print , right was produced by combining the prints of the two negatives shown at the top of this page . They were chosen because they were simple and had a similar range of tones . Both images needed enlarging by the same amount so that the two negatives were simply changed over in the enlarger and the easel shifted to position the leaves above the woman . When printing the leaves , the shading card was held stationary above the beach scene to create a sharp " horizon in the scene .
