Varying your picture proportions by cropping
Your final print need not conform to manu- facturers ' sizes of printing paper . Some- times the image is helped by cropping when enlarging . This need not be wasteful - large sheets , for example , can be cut lengthwise to give two narrow picture formats .
Long low prints emphasize horizontal features and actions ; tall thin versions tend to exaggerate height . Narrow , horizontal pictures are often more satisfying than the vertical kind , probably because of the way our eyes see the world .
When a print is cropped to very elongated proportions you tend to look at it from a closer viewpoint than if the entire negative had been printed this size . If you used a long focus lens for the image the reduced perspective works against the dynamic horizontal shape of the print . It is better to use a wide - angle lens , composing the picture within a central strip . Make as big an enlargement as possible - some enlarger heads can be to the floor , or even a wall .
