Working to themes
Working to a theme is a good way of developing your skill as a photographer . There are several kinds of theme on which you might choose to concentrate . The subject matter itself could provide the link for your pictures , like the photographs on these two pages , or you might decide to shoot a series of pictures based on one of the picture building elements , such as pattern or shape . Alternatively , you could tackle an abstract theme , such as love , greed or anger , or illustrate contrasting concepts , like young and old or large and small . If you are observant and imaginative , almost any theme can be treated in an interesting and unusual way .
Your project may consist of separate pictures , all relating to the same theme , or a sequence of pictures which tell a story , such as the building of a house . In either case , the way you arrange your photo- graphs on the final mount or album page is crucial to the success of your project . In general , try to avoid juxtaposing pictures of the same size - one larger picture placed with several smaller ones creates emphasis .
Water
Each of the pictures on this page includes water either as the main subject or as a part of the composition . Water is a good theme to begin with , because it can easily be found , and in a variety of forms .
Water and reflections
Reflections are an obvious subject for the theme of water . They can extend or distort the shapes in a picture , producing slightly unreal , ghostlike images such as shown left . Or you can use reflections to include subjects outside of your picture frame such as clouds or the tops of tall buildings . These bright reflec- tions can sometimes appear like windows on to another world .
Water and pattern
The concentric circles formed by rain or other objects falling on to still water create interesting patterns The bright reflections in the picture above , add to this effect .
Water and mood
Photographs of the sea , in particular , can evoke a strong mood and atmos- phere . In the picture , right , the over- cast sky was included to add to the subdued , almost somber mood .
