Preparing to make an enlargement
You save yourself a lot of time in the dark- room by using your set of contact prints to work out in advance which images you want to enlarge and how this can best be done . Use a print magnifier or large reading glass to select the pictures you want to enlarge ; check carefully the composition and image sharpness . If you have taken a series of exposures of one subject , a contact print sheet enables you to select which , if any , are the most successful .
Cardboard transparency mounts or , better still , two shaped cards will help you isolate your chosen pictures from the adjacent images . You can even use the cards to work out improvements in framing , cutting out unwanted elements by cropping ( see p . 83 ) . Use a white grease pencil to mark up the chosen images on the contact sheet .
Remember that enlarging will not only bring out the detail in your pictures but will also show up any deficiencies , such as camera shake , bad focusing , and dust or scratches on the negatives . Check the nega- tives for cleanliness before setting them up in the enlarger . Even a tiny hair or a small scum mark on the back of the film will show up on the print .
Selecting and positioning the negative
1. Use a magnifier to examine the contact print and a blower brush to clean the negatives . Mark the images you want to enlarge with a grease pencil .
2. Make sure that the negative you have selected is abso- lutely clean .
3. Check that the numbers in the rebates match those on the con- tact print to ensure that you have the right image .
4. Place the negative strip in the carrier shiny side upward with the image you want to enlarge positioned over the aperture .
5. Close the carrier and carefully insert it in the enlarger .
6. Switch out the white light and turn on the enlarger . Open the lens to the widest aperture and adjust the enlarger head until the image is approximately the size you want .
