Framing with shape and line
Both shape and line can be used to direct the viewer's eye across the picture to the main subject . Weak pictures often lack a center , or have the dominant lines or shapes leading away from the main subject .
- Shapes can direct the eye simply by fram- photographing ing the main subject through a doorway or window creates a frame within the picture frame . Objects en- closed by the frame then become separated and emphasized . Ideally the frame should relate in some way to its contents - a churchyard shown through the church doorway is an example ; but you can use almost anything to frame your subject trees , man - made structures , even people .
The frame of your picture itself is a shape which will appear to repeat rectangular shapes placed in it . Circular shapes will stand out in contrast to this geometric frame .
Framing and lead - in
The viewpoint in the picture . above , uses the rock shapes to pro- vide a relevant frame and lead - in to the small figure of the climber in the background . The wide range of tones in the weathered rocks conveys form and texture .
The two readers in the picture . left , are isolated from unwanted - detail by the view down the spiral staircase which frames and leads- in to them . Two exposure readings were taken for the stairs and the table - and these were averaged .
For really accurate framing , a camera free of parallax error ( see p . 27 ) is essential .
Assignment : using subject qualities
Choose an interesting landscape and take the following pictures :
A. Recording a full range of tones in the subject . Then take three more pictures : one using gray and white tones only for a high key effect ; one using gray and black tones only for a low key effect ; and one ( waiting for stronger lighting if necessary ) which uses dark and light tones only , with high contrast .
B. Using the lighting to bring out a pattern . Make this the full frame - subject of the photograph .
C. Of a textured surface close - up using the lighting quality and direction to enhance the surface quality .
D. Of subjects within the landscape , per- haps on a near horizon , that are strongly backlit . Take two pictures : one which em- phasizes the shape of a single subject , the other which masses two or more shapes into one , perhaps reducing them to a single silhouette .
E. Using lines formed by roads , tracks , field boundaries or even the curve of a hill to draw the eye toward a point of interest .
