How to use this book
This book is a teach - yourself , structured course in photography . It takes you from absolute basics to a fairly advanced level in a logical progression of stages , which you can work through at a pace which suits you . As you can see from the contents list , black and white and color photography - camera and darkroom work are both featured in depth , presented in sections which make
maximum use of drawings and photographic examples . Photography is a combination of applied science and art , and both aspects are explained in technical and picture building sections respectively . These are organized in such a way that you can concentrate on the practical aspects of technique at one level and follow this with an appropriate stage of picture building before progressing further.
At regular intervals you will find assignments , reminders and summaries . Tackling the sort of practical photography suggested in the assignments will make it very much easier to learn and understand points made in the main text . The summaries and reminders are particularly useful if you are using this book as part of a photography course .
There are ten main sections . The first section looks at some of the ways photography is used today , the second at the basic principles of light and light - sensitive materials which make photography possible .
The third section Camera Technique covers the basic methods of using a camera . It is the foundation of all the other work in the book because it explains the camera controls , from a cheap simple camera to a more sophisticated single lens reflex . It is divided into four sub - sections or " Steps " which are intended to be read in sequence . We look , for example , at choosing film - at this stage for black and white photography only . The reason why black and white photography is covered before color is that all the basic controls can be learned in the simplest way . The fourth section - Picture Building - begins with the fundamental aspects of composition in black and white . The fifth section is Black and White Processing and Printing . The first Step shows how to process the film , for which a darkroom is not essential . Later Steps explain contact printing and enlarging , and show the darkroom facilities , equipment and materials needed for this work .
Advanced sections
By this point in the book you should be able to use a camera with a standard lens in natural lighting , and successfully process and print your results . But further equipment such as extra lenses , close - up accessories , and artificial lighting can extend the scope of your photography considerably . The sixth section - Further Equipment and Techniques - is an advanced course in various aspects of camera work and more sophisticated equipment which , although still based on black and white photography , will also have direct relevance to the later color sections . The last Step of this section introduces some additional facets of picture building , made possible by this extra equipment .
The following section - Advanced Darkroom Techniques - takes your work in the darkroom further by discussing ways in which you can control and manipulate the quality of the negative and the final image . The section ends with finishing . mounting , and presenting your black and white prints .
The next two sections deal with color photography . The first- Color Photography - deals with most of the aspects of color work outside the darkroom . It concentrates first on the technical differences between black and white and color films , such as the need to relate film type to lighting . Step 2 looks at the additional scope that working in color provides for your picture building .
The second section Color Processing and Printing is another self - contained " mini - course " , this time dealing with the film processing and darkroom aspects of color photography . It explains how slide and print processes work and , in particular , the procedures for processing both types of color film , and making your own color prints at home .
The last main section is called Evolving Your Own Approach Up to this point all the illustrations have showed you how and what to do . These pages contain a selection of work by fourteen photographers who differ greatly in their approach to photography . The work included shows just what an individualistic medium photography can be . The photographs demonstrate how the technical principles and visual ideas discussed in the earlier parts of the book can be applied in a highly personal way . The aim of this section is to show how , given confidence and control of the medium , and a point of view to communicate , you can develop a strong style of your own .
The Appendix contains information on a variety of cameras and techniques , which are not covered in the main part of the book , and a glossary of common photographic terms .

But you could use each section or group of sections as self - contained units , to cover particular aspects of photography that interest you .
