While color harmony is often found in landscape, you will have to be more selective in urban surroundings and adjust viewpoint and framing carefully to encompass harmonizing colors. In many towns the effects of color harmony are quite deliberate, although the same is true of color contrast-people may paint their houses and stores to blend with a street color scheme, as shown right, or to emphasize their individuality. When you are taking portraits, still life, or other controlled subjects you can build harmonious color schemes into your picture to express different
moods. Even in less controlled situations, you can
often enhance color harmony by exploiting the
chance introduction of a harmonizing color.
Adding other harmonious elements You can strengthen color harmony by using weak matching filters over the lens or by exploiting a natural light cast, or increase the effect by com- posing your picture to incorporate repeated patterns and balanced shapes. Compositional elements are of prime importance in color harmony. You can be fairly sure of harmonious color rendering when tones are subdued and light is soft and diffused. Even quite strong different colors can be harmonized by the presence of neutral areas or a linking tone.
Contrasting colors in a scene can also be in harmony if the colored objects have certain qualities in common-tone, texture, symmetrical or repeating shapes or patterns.
