Using the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S in practice, I was very impressed by its build quality and tight tolerances. The lens focuses internally and has extensive weather sealing, making it a good match for harsh weather conditions. Strangely, there is no fluorine coating on the front element, but that’s the only downside to the lens’s otherwise excellent construction.

Handling


The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 handles as you would expect of a professional-tier lens. The focusing ring is large and well-damped, and the barrel of the lens has plenty of useful manual controls. There’s the typical M-A switch, a custom function button, and an additional control ring near the back of the lens. There’s another ring-looking section at the front of the lens, but this doesn’t spin and is for grip purposes only.

This lens takes large, 82mm filters on the front filter thread. The huge HB-106 lens hood is included and features a push-button to unlock from the front of the lens. Focusing Characteristics


The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S focuses quickly, quietly, and accurately. The lens has a large focus throw to ensure pinpoint focus at f/1.2. Meanwhile, the dual stepping motors allow surprisingly fast focus for an f/1.2 lens.

Granted, it doesn’t focus quite as fast as a speed demon like the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S, but it’s plenty fast even for quickly-moving subjects like someone jogging or dancing. This holds true in low light, where the bright maximum aperture is a major asset. Side-by-side against other Nikon Z portrait lenses, I found that it focused just a hair slower than the Z 85mm f/1.8 S and a hair faster than the Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena.

One of the few downsides of this lens is that it doesn’t have very good close-focus capabilities. You won’t find it a good match for something like wedding ring photos, even in a pinch. The maximum magnification of 0.11× is only enough to fill the frame with a subject that is about 33 cm / 13 inches wide.

Distortion


The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S has minimal distortion – unsurprising for a lens of this design, but still welcome. I measure 0.96% pincushion distortion in the lab, which is difficult to see unless you deliberately go looking for it. In the rare circumstances that it shows up in your photo, it is easily corrected.

In uncorrected images, the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S has surprisingly little vignetting – much less than I would have predicted. Here’s a full chart of vignetting as measured in the lab:



The maximum that we see here is 1.38 stops of vignetting, which occurs at infinity focus and f/1.2. This is already low; you usually won’t need to correct it, and it only improves as you stop down. Well done, Nikon! It’s very unusual to see this on an f/1.2 lens. Looks like the lens’s massive diameter isn’t just for show.
Lateral Chromatic Aberration


There is a modest amount of lateral chromatic aberration on the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S. Though a little more than I would have expected, it is not enough to be bothersome. Here’s the chart:



Like I always say, anything under about one pixel is almost impossible to notice in real-world images, even with chromatic aberration corrections turned off. The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S doesn’t quite clear that bar, but it hovers just above it. It’s safe to say that you will rarely see lateral chromatic aberration with the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S. When you do, it can be corrected without leaving behind any lingering artifacts.

Sharpness


The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is a sharp lens throughout the aperture range. Even wide open at f/1.2, most of the frame looks quite strong:



You’ll see a little more context on the next page of this review, but this is a very impressive performance. I wouldn’t hesitate to use the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S at any aperture, including its signature setting of f/1.2. I’m especially struck by the strong midframes. Even if your portrait subject is off-center at f/1.2, they won’t be a blurry mess – far from it. More often, you may find yourself lowering the texture, sharpness, and clarity values in post-processing when you’re working with this lens, or you may end up showing too many details on your subject’s face.

In terms of other sharpness issues, there is a little bit of field curvature on this lens, mainly at f/1.2. Unless you’re shooting deep-sky astrophotography, it is irrelevant (and even then, it’s not bad). I also noticed a small amount of focus shift when stopping down from f/1.2 to f/2.8, with no focus shift at the subsequent apertures. Considering the paper-thin depth of field on this lens, I recommend re-focusing each time that you change apertures within that range.

Bokeh


Bokeh is another word for the qualities of the background blur in a photo. “Good” bokeh is subjective, since different photographers have their own preferences for how the background blur looks. That said, photographers commonly want their background blur to be soft, not distracting. Out-of-focus highlights that are round, uniform, and soft-edged are usually favorable.

85mm f/1.2 lenses are dream lenses for bokeholics. You can throw almost any background into a soft, creamy blanket with such lenses, and the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is no exception. You need only look at the sample photos throughout this review to see the isolation power of f/1.2.

Here’s a comparison of the same subject from f/1.2 to f/4 to show what you’re gaining with such a wide maximum aperture:

But bokeh isn’t just about how shallow you can make your depth of field – it’s also about how out-of-focus specular highlights look. When the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S was announced, some photographers were concerned that it has two aspherical elements, which sometimes impart textures to out-of-focus specular highlights. There was also the question of whether we would see a “cat’s eye” shape to bokeh. How does the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S fare in these respects?

The answer is a little bit mixed. If you look closely enough, you can find out-of-focus specular highlights with a little texture, like in the image below:

Also, note that the image above was taken at f/1.8, demonstrating that out-of-focus specular highlights remain nice and round even as you stop down. The rounded 11-blade aperture diaphragm is working exactly as intended here. At worst, there is only a small defined edge. There is also a little longitudinal chromatic aberration, where out-of-focus highlights behind the subject take on a slight green halo, and those in front of the subject become slightly magenta.

What about cat’s-eye bokeh? There isn’t much, if any, visible in the image above, which I took at f/1.8. However, you can see it distinctly when shooting wide open, like in the f/1.2 version of the photo below.

Personally, I’m not bothered by the cat’s-eye shape, but bokeh is subjective. If you don’t like it, your best bet is to pick the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena instead. Nikon designed the Plena with a much larger than full-frame image circle in an effort to get totally circular bokeh throughout the frame. Meanwhile, the Z 85mm f/1.2 S has a more traditional image circle.

At the end of the day, we can nitpick little details, but the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S does a very good job with blurry backgrounds. That’ll be even clearer on the next page of this review, where you’ll see how it compares to some alternatives.

Flare


As with most long, complex lenses, you’ll get plenty of flare with the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S when the sun is in the frame. The lens’s nano crystal coating does a good job retaining contrast in backlit situations. That said, I’m surprised that Nikon didn’t use their higher-end ARNEO coatings in this lens. At $2800, I would have expected such coatings (which are found in the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena, for example) – but even so, the lens doesn’t do a bad job in backlit situations compared to other 85mm lenses, so maybe I’m complaining about nothing.

Because the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is primarily a portrait lens, I’ve added a bokeh comparison to this page of the review before my typical sharpness comparison. The test below will be very familiar if you read our Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena review. I’ve decided to show it again here because of its relevance to anyone who is considering the 85mm f/1.2 S.

I tested four Nikon Z portrait lenses side-by-side for this comparison: the Z 50mm f/1.2 S, 85mm f/1.2 S, 85mm f/1.8 S, and 135mm f/1.8 S Plena. The tests are divided into two stages with different camera-to-subject distances. This should give you a good idea not only of the bokeh of these four lenses, but also the perspective distortion and rendering of each.
Test #1: Constant Tripod Position


First, let us look at the background blur and compositions when shooting from a fixed tripod position approximately 5 meters / 16 feet away from the subject. This is a very common distance to take portrait photos because it is considered a “natural” perspective that does not distort the subject’s face in an unpleasant way. Here, I took a series of photos at the maximum aperture value for each lens.

I invite you to draw your own conclusions, but to me, the difference in this comparison is more about the perspective than anything else – and that’s a question of which story you are trying to tell. Personally, I like the 135mm f/1.8 Plena photo the best of the series, but it’s a subjective judgement.

Of the two 85mm photos, however, the shallower depth of field of the f/1.2 maximum aperture is clearly apparent. To me, it really benefits the photo.

Test #2: Constant Subject Size


This next test shines a light on how shallow your depth of field can be with each lens and how much subject distortion/compression takes place at the various focal lengths. (The subject’s size in the frame was kept constant by standing farther back when using longer lenses.)

This time, it’s clear that the blurriest backgrounds are from the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S and the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 Plena. The Plena has the least “cat’s eye” look to any out-of-focus specular highlights in the corners. It also has the least vignetting.

However, to my eye, the 85mm perspective feels the most natural at this distance. My favorite image of the set comes from the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S – it has a really nice perspective, neither too compressed nor too exaggerated. I also find it considerably better than the photo from the 85mm f/1.8 S, with the shallower depth of field drawing the viewer’s attention directly to the subject’s eyes.

FYI, you can find the relative depth of field of any of these lenses by doing a simple calculation to find the lens’s entrance pupil size. All you need to do is divide the focal length by the maximum aperture. For the 85mm f/1.2, that gives you an entrance pupil size of 85mm/1.2 = about 71mm. That’s only a little smaller than the entrance pupil of the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena (75mm) and considerably larger than that of the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.2 and 85mm f/1.8 (which are 42mm and 47mm respectively). No wonder that in the photos above, the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 and Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 Plena are on another level when it comes to subject isolation.

Sharpness Comparisons


Although I believe that a bokeh comparison is more relevant than a sharpness comparison, it’s also worth showing just how good the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is in a head-to-head where pure resolving power is concerned. Here’s a sampling of various portrait lenses and how they perform in the lab:



















We’re looking at some of Nikon’s sharpest-ever lenses here, and the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is right up there with them. It handily beats its F-Mount predecessor, the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4G, and its performance at the wider apertures is especially impressive relative to the other lenses here.

That said, I’m also struck by the fact that from f/2.8 and narrower, there really is no reason to pick the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S over a lot of the less expensive lenses here. The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S comes away from this comparison looking especially strong, with a very comparable performance to the f/1.2 version in the range from f/2.8 and narrower (a little weaker in the corners, but even sharper in the center). It goes to show that you really are paying – both in price and bulk – for the f/1.2 maximum aperture more than anything else

Our Recommendation


The Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S is optically excellent, not only with great sharpness and a paper-thin depth of field at f/1.2, but also with surprisingly little vignetting – a bane of many f/1.2 lenses. Combine that with the lens’s impeccable build quality and handling, and there really is little to complain about with the performance of the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 S.

That said, it’s easy to latch onto the lens’s size, weight, and price as potential drawbacks. I’m going to quote my friend and fellow Photography Life writer Libor when I asked him about that, because he really has a way with words: “My only reservation is that the lens is huge. My reporter’s photo bag is not built for such monsters. Even on the Z9, it’s a piece of a lens.”

I think it’s worth mentioning that the venerable Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena is actually smaller and lighter than this lens (though still very bulky) and less expensive at $2500. Given the different focal lengths and aperture values of these two lenses, they’re not quite meant for the same photographers. Still, I can’t help but think that the Nikon Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena is a little more compelling if you’re on the fence about which focal length you prefer. Its optics are somehow a hair better – including no vignetting or cat’s-eye bokeh – and the Plena even has a slightly larger entrance pupil, allowing for a little shallower depth of field.

Another promising alternative is the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 S. Of course, the maximum aperture is narrower (by a little more than one stop), but the image quality in every other respect is surprisingly similar. At $800, it’s going to be a lot easier to justify for many photographers – with the $2000 you save, you can get a lot of nice lighting equipment or travel to some amazing places for photography.
