TIPS and ADVICE from MARKETS
Here are words of wisdom and very specific instructions as to the kind of photography wanted by special markets seeking color and black - and - white freelance photo illustrations .
DESPITE the fact that most picture buyers are not photographers , they are quite knowledge able about what makes a good picture . They are experts in exactly what they want for their par ticular requirements . You can't expect to sell poor quality work to any of them , they won't buy it .
As a group , these photographic art buyers are interested in getting the best work they can for their publication , service or field . To be sure of getting material that fits their needs they do not hesitate to pass along precise information to photo graphers as to their needs . By working together , of course , both photographer and buyer help each other so the teamwork becomes mutually effective and profitable .
Markets for architectural photography have very high standards for the illustrations they buy . The editor of Building Progress , a monthly trade magazine , explained their requirements , " We seek photos of unusual construction in architecture . We use only the highest quality architectural photography - both exterior and interior of com pleted projects . No available light photos please " !
The editor of another architectural magazine puts it this way , " The successful photographers we work with sell the sizzle and not the steak . In other words , we prefer photography for Architec tural Digest that dramatizes a subject ( room in teriors , in our case ) instead of that which only records . "
A demanding field but a profitable one .
The photo requirements for Kaiser News , an external house organ Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. , are quite a bit different than for most other publications . " We are interested in new techniques of composition , developing , print ing . We don't use run - of - the - mill pictures it must be experimental , unique , far out ; nothing straight or mundane . We don't want the usual straight shots and only use photography if it's something that hasn't had wide exposure . "
Good photo technique essential
Metlfax Magazine , a controlled circulation business publication circulated to 90,000 metal working industry executives , states that it looks for " Superb photography showing metal - working subjects of interest for a full - page feature sum ming up some aspect of the metal - working field dramatically . It should symbolize the specific field of metal - working : steel making , drilling , milling , spinning , stamping , grinding , welding , measuring , inspecting . Must be absolutely up - to - date .
unusual " Pattern shots , strong perspective , angles , texture shots , unusually lighted pix , human interest ideas , still life photos of metal parts are all possibilities . Model releases for people are required . "
Further comments by the editor included , " Photos should be dramatic , needle - sharp b / w vertical composition photos for full page repro duction . "
Grit , published by Grit Publishing Co. in Wil liamsport , Pa . , is a weekly newspaper with a cir Oculation of almost one and one - half million read ers . It uses black - and - white and color photos which , " . should have as much impact as possi ble and hold considerable visual interest . Scenics should include , where possible , a person or animal either in the foreground or background to lend interest and perspective to the overall shot . "
Photographers in the freelance field should be aware of the technical aspects of the particular subject which they photograph . Take , for instance , the specifications for Fire Journal published by National Fire Protection Ass'n in Boston . This magazine needs photos of fire scenes both during and after a fire as well shots of fire departments in action on the fire ground . The pictures must fulfill certain technical requirements , too : " Fire fighters should have on full protective clothing . Watch that smoke and water do not obscure action . Keep crowds , bystanders and miscellaneous objects out of the photograph . Do not obscure the building or action with a lot of fire appar atus in the foreground of the photograph .
In addition to specifying that photos submitted for cover possibilities should be of vertical for mat for Rudder magazine , the editor noted that he looks for any transparency that says boating ( sail or power , big or small boats ) with a little unusual treatment in color , composition , camera angle . " The " pretty boat " public relations type of shot is not what they want .
In the aviation field , Aero Magazine also accents the vertical format requirement while noting they are only interested in photos that are pertinent to general aviation aircraft owners . For Motorcade magazine , single photos and picture stories re lated to automotive enthusiasts ' interests are sought . They should be action shots of striking impact about what's happening in the world of high performance autos .
Another publication in the automobile field has different needs . Sports Car Graphic wants photos of exotic automobiles on an exclusive basis along with action shots of automobiles in com petition and human interest subjects around auto racing courses . The accent is on action for Rotor & Wing magazine : " We prefer action photos of helicopters and STOL aircraft . They should show helicopters and STOL ( Short Take - Off and Land ing ) planes in actual use doing such things as fire - fighting , game herding , police patrol , traffic control , riot control , rescue construction , news gathering , sightseeing and other activities where these types of aircraft have unique capabilities .
Aquarium magazine is in a specialized field published for devotees of fresh and salt water tropical fish . The requisites listed for it state , " Only top quality photos wanted . The subject ( tropical fish ) should be more than 70 % of the total area of the color transparency and must be sharp . " Also specifying image sharpness is Coro net magazine which looks for color shots of well known personalities for covers . " We don't look for sublety or art noveau - we need poster - type color for sharp reproduction . "
" Top quality photographs only " of cats or cat related subjects are wanted by Cat Fancy maga zine . Action - type pictures oriented to the con struction industry are sought for Engineering News - Record , a weekly magazine in the construc tion field . As with many publications , the pho tographer must plan his composition for cover shots to allow for the logo ( name ) of the magazine at the top of the vertical format . On story assign ments for this book , " Direct contact with the photographer is required . "
Comply with technical requirements
In addition to the type and content of pictures for specific markets , the photographer must also comply with certain technical requirements and these may be diametrically opposed from one market to another . Take , for instance , the fact that the American Rifleman magazine says , " We do not use color negatives or prints on our cover . Transparencies only . Only rarely do we use 35mm transparencies and these must be extremely sharp with excellent color register . " The Johnson City ( Tenn . ) Press Chronicle , however , puts it , " We prefer color negatives instead of color transpar encies . "
Quoted verbatim from the editor of the monthly trade magazine - Drilling - DCW published in Dallas , Texas is the following statement of special needs and requirements and limitations which both editor and photographer must face up : " Photos must be directly associated with drilling , completing or servicing of oil and gas wells . With in that sphere of interest may be scenic , person ality or how - to ( pictures Ed . ) , with how - to offering the most promising market .
" We're a specialized petroleum industry maga zine concerned with advancement of the reader through improvement of his capabilities or , im provement of the industry as a whole . Readers are owners and supervisors of oil and gas well drilling , completing and servicing equipment . They're interested in job performance .
Please no " gee whiz " or " black gold " stuff . We urge that you query first or , if you have al ready shot on speculation submit contacts with the story line . We do a lot of our own camera work and are accustomed to looking at contact sheets .
" We're picky and we don't pay much , so hold your costs down . We buy very little color so sug gest you stick with black - and - white . "
That's good advice based on an honest approach to both your interests and those of the publication . It verifies the fact that photo buyers are interested in their freelancers .
PUBLICITY photos must be eye - catching to be successful . Cypress Gardens , Fla . lensman made this " stopper " for Johnson outboard motors .
