SELLING the GIRLIE MARKETS
Wide open sales potentials exist for the photographer who can do a good creative , as well as technical , job of picturing nude models for the growing fields of the sexy magazines .
LONG BEFORE the emerging sex liberation period tonsor of the mid - 1960's , men's visits to the local ial parlors included eyeballing the lightly draped fe male figures in the Police Gazette . Considered the most risque sex publication of the early 1900's , it sel dom showed more than a bare bosom .
The Police Gazette was considered socially unaccept able for home reading . Its suggestive , daring , sexy photos shocked the uninformed , tradition - mannered ladies of those Victorian days .
The public's acceptance of " sexy " magazines grew a bit during the 40's with pinup girl photos in many magazines and GI publications during the war . The early 50 cent issues of Esquire magazine were high lighted by the very delightful Petty Girl drawings .
By 1972 , the publi erotic female nude had be come part of society's everyday life to the extent that there are many " girlie " magazines openly sold over the counter and displayed on neighborhood news stands . This general acceptance of the nudie publica tions has opened a fairly large and profitable picture sales market to challenge many photographers .
If you are enterprising and have the knack to com bine erotica with romanticism and can create art photographs of the nude female figure in good taste , it will be worth your while to check into the " girlie " magazine market . Among these specialized - appeal publications , the photo art content runs the gamut from truly creative figure studies to photography bor dering on pornography .
The latter type of work , incidentally , usually pays lower rates than that for the more creative pho tography . Photographers who cater to the publica tions in this area rarely break the higher class markets .
What or what not to show
International recognition and high financial re turns are the reward for the successful , creative , tal ented figure photographer . However , the elimination of the restrictions concerning pubic areas showing in illustrations in publications going through the mails , has made the challenge for creative and good taste photography even more difficult . What or what not to show and how to show it , in order to not offend the reading public , calls for the talents of a master photographer combining original creative thinking with a lot of tedious work .
The acceptance of nudity in print has come a long way from the days of the Police Gazette . With " girlie " magazines now firmly entrenched , a new nudity trend was set in early 1972 when Cosmopolitan mag azine , a longtime family favorite , introduced its " Playmate of the Year " . The photo was a gatefold spread in color showing a nude motion picture actor reclining on a bear rug . Photographer Francesco Sca vullo's excellent picture may well have opened the alternate market the male nude !
The philosophy of the girlie magazine business was explained by Playboy's photography editor Mark Kauffman at a University of Miami - Wilson Hicks Photojournalism Conference : " We have a safety valve going for us that people want . We cross a line of racial problems , economic problems , political prob lems and world problems by providing entertainment or , call it escapism . To entertain people , have humor , be a little frivolous takes a lot of very serious thinking . Our photographic fantasies and escapisms will continue while our realism comes through our articles and text pieces .
" We do thing on social cognizance . Erotica is a problem . We are faced with how far or how little to go . We do it month by month " , Kauffman said
Playboy magazine was the forerunner and trend setter for today's many girlie magazines . With a cir culation of more than 7 - million , it is considered to be the most successful publication among magazines .
Photo editor Kauffman continued , " We have a de finite format . It is designed and it is rigid - but , within its rigidity there is a lot to be left for quality fun , humor , imagination and entertainment .
A tremendous number of photographs pass across my desk " , he remarked , " and they are completely unrelated to the type of material we use in Playboy . Photographers planning to submit work should very carefully study our style and treatment , grasp the re quirements and shoot their photographs accordingly .
We depend for most of our photography on our eight

Penthouse's Executive Vice - President Mr. Irvin E. Billman also added , " We buy freelance photography frequently .
