Pilots know flight rules
Professional pilots will know all of the rules im posed by the Federal Aviation Agency regarding use of air space , proper altitudes , required radio contact and clearances ( permission to fly in certain restricted or congested areas ) . If your first attempts at aerials are made in a friend's plane , be sure he knows the flight rules because they are extremely varied and complicated . Violations are severely punished - but , that is the concern of the pilot ( professional or pri vate ) since it is his license that is at stake .
Your concern , as well as his , must be for the safety of the flight . Basically , the altitude rule is 1000 feet above the ground or above the highest point in a built - up area . Three hundred feet is legal over open areas where no people or buildings exist . The same applies for over water but not over boats . Some states have different rules , too .
When hiring your plane and before starting the flight , have a conference with your pilot . Plan all of the details ahead of your flight . Once in the air , you'll have enough other things to remember .
Describe what , where and how you want to shoot . With that information , the pilot can be of more help to you . Listen to him when he says that he can or cannot do certain things . He knows the capabili ties of his aircraft and what it can safely do .
A constant slow cruise , say 20 mph above stalling speed while circling over your subject , is best . The plane is fairly quiet and attracts little attention from the ground . Cutting the engine , taking a picture , then gunning the engine and going around again then repeating this process several times , will create annoyance on the part of people on the ground and this is not desirable .
Rental planes available for aerials are to be found at most airports . The prices may vary according to the location ; they are generally lower outside of the larger metropolitan areas . The following rates were obtained at Teterboro Airport , N.J. and include pilot's flight time :
First choice would be the American Trainer at $ 27 per hour . For obliques , a hatch slides back and the pilot can put the plane into a bank . You'll have no obstructions when shooting from this great little low wing plane .
Cessna 150 , widely available - $ 29 per hour . Cessna 172 ( $ 36 per hour ) is a high wing type ( as is the 150 ) . The left window can be opened or a door taken off , if you can talk the operator of the rental service into doing so . Both Cessnas fly fine with the door removed .
Piper Cherokee is a low wing aircraft ( $ 36 per hour ) . The door cannot be removed nor a window opened so you must shoot through the window pane . Of course , the old familiar Piper Cub is fine for pic tures but it is now a rare bird .
Helicopter rates are high
Many types of helicopters can be rented at prices starting at $ 120 per hour and going higher .
Prices like these tell you that you can't take on any assignment's for a $ 10 or $ 25 aerial shot for the local newspaper and , that's about what most newspapers want to pay . However , if a newspaper is doing a feature article on of the new construction in your town or , the new highways that are coming through the area , the new parks and recreation areas underway and they will pay $ 10- $ 15 or more .
for each location you photograph , then a quick bit of arithmetic will show the assignment is profitable .
Similarly , you might visit some of the industries and other installations in your area and suggest to them that they ought to have aerial views . By ganging up a number of them to shoot on one flight , when you have a good flying day , you can reap a nice profit .
Explain additional costs
When it comes to obtaining assignments , your cli ents will usually insist that you name a fee and they will not give you any clues as to what price range they are willing to pay . In many cases they will be low .
Most of them expect to pay the same rate for aerials as for ground work although air work must bring higher prices . Some clients , dealing with ex perienced photographers whom they've used pre viously , will pay an appreciably larger fee for aerials , particularly when huge photo murals are the desired end product . For a beginner , a general rule of thumb is to ask for a fee which will cover time , expenses ( film , processing , plane , travel to and from airport ) , plus the profit you feel you are entitled to make on the assignment . To enhance the project , suggest to the client the many ways in which they can use the photos so that each different use will ( in their eyes ) , be reducing the costs of the pictures accordingly .
