HOW do PHOTO AGENCIES WORK ?

No GROUP of people seem to have more diffi culty communicating with those with whom they hope to establish meaningful relationships than do the freelance photographers . Definitions are necessary to any exchange of ideas . Let's start with " freelance photographer . " What does that phrase mean ?
On the face of it , the term means a photog rapher who is " on his own , " i.e .: is not on the staff or on contract to anyone . If that is the explicit definition , then there is an implicit one that a freelance photographer is a professional and is therefore , an independent businessman .
My experience with freelance photographers has been that the majority do not realize that they are actually in business for themselves and that they are subject to the same laws of commerce as other business men . An investment is necessary to go into any business and a good businessman projects his goals over a period of time .

Must have capital to start
A freelance photographer is in the business of producing photographs for sale . He must be capi talized sufficiently to cover the period of time between the production of his first pictures and the cash flow which will enable him to be self supporting . There is no fixed amount of capital that applies to all .
Some may moonlight have an income from a different source and build their photography busi ness as a part - time endeavor . Others may decide to open a studio immediately , hire assistants and go into business on an elaborate scale . In either there is a case , the same economic rules apply ratio between capital , time , expenses , production and sales which will be operative .
I am identified in the subhead at the beginning of this article as the " director of a picture agency . ' What does that mean exactly .
In this case , the picture agency is Globe Photos , Inc. , and I am a " director " by virtue of being one of three men who own equal shares of the stock of the company . My primary function is to manage the west coast office of Globe , located in Los Angeles , California .
This office concerns itself more with the pro duction of photographs , working directly with the freelance photographers in the area , rather than with sales . Because of geography , we are heavily involved in the entertainment field particularly motion pictures and television . Globe has become the major source of photographs of entertainment personalities as well as coverage of all aspects of television and motion picture production .
