Trend towards unusual photos
The photographic trend in today's modern travel publications is away from the old standard general information picture and towards the symbolic type photo . Take a good look at Venture , Travel & Leisure , Holiday and other travel magazines and you will see what is wanted . To help make differ ent , unusual , mood pictures I make use of a long telephoto or an extreme wide angle lenses .
An out - of - proportion shot of a fiery orange - red sun ball hanging just above the horizon , with playful tourists silhouetted on the beach ( all pulled tightly together so as to fill the frame with the long focal length lens ) , will sell before a routine normal lens view of the same sunset - and beach scene . An extreme wide - angle picture made in the very center of a crowd ( with some people as close as 4 - feet from the lens ) , in a market place is much more effective than a general view scene .
To create other unusual pictures , I make use of the foreground - background subject technique , existing light mood shots and sequence picture stories . I frequently photograph the unavoidable routine scenes at sunrise , sunset or night to get a " new " look in my shots .
When lighting levels are too low to guarantee good technical quality , use multiple flash auxiliary lighting . Don't settle on the flash - on - camera shot unless it gives you a specific effect or , needed flash fill - in to open up shadows . Multiple flash illumination , when properly used , will provide the correct lighting ratios that are very important in good color photography for reproduction .
Since travel photography dictates the use of minimum size and weight in photographic gear , one of my basic principles is to carry only the equipment and supplies that I can comfortably " wear " on my body . Accordingly , I have settled on the use of flashcubes as the most practical auxiliary lighting for my travel photography .
Flashcubes provide me with the greatest amount of packaged , controllable light from the smallest practical size and weight of equipment . Where flash is needed , I use one flashcube at the camera to provide basic illumination and trigger one or more remote photo - eye flashcube guns strategically positioned to light those areas essential to the shot . I have designed my own flashcube guns by modi fying an existing Toshiba BC Rotomatic ( auto matic rotating ) Flashcube Gun with a Green Dome Photo - Electric Eye Trigger unit .
COLORFUL stained glass windows make fine pictures . Have someone in photo to give it more interest , as above . Below framing and dra matic lighting creates greater viewer impact .
Open flash and time exposures
or If the subject in a scene can be held motionless , if I need a slight motion effect , I use the non - synchronized open - flash technique . It allows me to register important existing light sources in the picture lamps , subdued daylight filtering through windows , handheld torches and wood burning fireplaces and camp fires .
I also make use of multiple time exposures to create dramatic lighting effects . This generally involves setting up the camera with a photographic C - clamp mounted on a railing or other convenient support so it cannot move . A first exposure is made just after sunset while there is still some afterglow in the sky . This registers basic details in the scene . Later , without advancing the film , a second exposure is made for the existing lighting . The result is a picture showing details in the main subject , rather than a stark silhouette , with the flood or spotlighting on the scene properly regis tered against the darkened sky .
I have found it best to make overall " night scenes " just a few minutes after sunset when there is still some daylight in the sky and street and building lights have just come on . I bracket sev eral exposures until all daylight has disappeared
from the heavens . The technique results in many dramatic views of cities and places from high vant age points .
WIDEANGLE lens gave great depth of field in shot of exiled Tibetan Lamas at prayer in Dal
Travel photographers basically shoot color film because their end use is to show color slides . How ever , the overall market requirements ( if you plan to sell your pictures ) , is greater for b / w prints with most publications .
Full - time professional travel photographers use both color positive transparency film and b / w negative film to fit the situation . Or , they dupli cate certain scenes with both films using more than one camera .
The system that I use has proven to be an ex cellent compromise allowing me to standardize on only one type of film . My use of color negative film is slightly more expensive but is well worth th additional costs .
From color negatives , I can have made very high quality color slides , color prints or black - and white prints . In addition , the color negatives re main in my possession they aren't subject to the risk of being submitted to markets .
Color negative films also provide me with pic ture security since it possesses a four - stop exposure range from one stop under to two stops over - ex posure . When compared to the plus - or - minus 12
housie , India . If you don't have a wide - angle optic , stop lens down to f / 22- f / 32 for depth .
CIRCUS in Russia was shot under existing light . This is the type of shot that sparks up a travel story because it adds local " color . " Don't use flash when picturing performances such as this .
stop latitude of reversal color transparency films , the use of color negative film for travel photog raphy becomes logical . It ensures a reproduceable negative regardless of the many problems of cal culated exposure and tremendously varied lighting conditions encountered by the travel photog rapher .
Show off your work
Whenever your work is published , use it to your advantage . Buy extra copies to use as future refer ence and promotional material . Although standard practice for publications is to provide the author with two copies of the periodical in which his work appears . I usually purchase 25 copies of magazines and 10 copies of newspapers in which my work appears . I file one copy in a looseleaf reference binder and find that I constantly make use of it in pre - planning other material .
The other copies I use as " thank you's " to officials who helped or provided courtesies . Copies are also used to show editors and government tourist agencies when promoting new " on spec ulation " travel assignments . I also make color slides of my published works to use in lectures . I frame a few very select , important pages such as color covers to hang in my workroom and to give to friends and family .
It is always important to have inexpensive pro motional material on hand and the copies of the articles speak effectively for themselves in help ing to clinch assignments . There's an old adage that fits this situation nicely : Success breeds suc cess . So , make the most out of anything you have published as you build your career in sales of your travel photography .
SHOW tourists enjoying themselves in your pictures as in the photo below in Cuzco , Peru .
