SELLING your TRAVEL PHOTOS
John Faber , SMP's travel photography expert , explains his successful methods and techniques for shooting and selling pictures of photo scenic places , people from all over the globe .
AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONAL photog rapher , you eventually will want to sell the photos you make on your vacation or business trip . Perhaps the inspiration is based on the fact your pictures are either photographically better or their subject content more important than those you have been seeing in current publications . There also is the enticing thought that every suc cessful sale brings in revenue to help offset the cost of your travel adventures .
Now that you have decided you have a saleable commodity , either before or after returning from your travels , the next step is : how to go about making a successful sale . Although there is no guaranteed system for the freelance photographer , there are several " common sense " approaches to remunerative sales of travel pictures .
All approaches require a full understanding of the needs and style of the market you intend sell ing . You can either buy a copy of the publication or go to your public library to examine back issues . I often visit a major stationery where I can skim through all the magazines and paper - back books on display .
When I have culled the publications which I feel I can sell , I buy the issues and use them for more detailed analysis at home . The mastheads show the names of the contributions editor - or , managing editor , along with the current mailing address . I either mail my material to - or , arrange for a personal appointment with a known in dividual . I have found the person - to - person re lationship most effective .
Buy market directories
There also are several excellent sales reference sources which you can buy including Writer's Digest and the Standard Periodical Directory . For the house organ field there is the Gebbie Directory of House Organs published by Verstegen Printing and Lithographing Co. , Box 1111 , Sioux City , Iowa 51102 .
These list the names and addresses of various publications . Some furnish descriptions of the types of material they use , the prices paid for photos and stories and the name of the picture buyer . Your local bookstore can secure these market directories for you .
Just be certain you buy the latest issue . Other wise you might find you have addressed your material to a wrong previous address or to a person no longer with the publication or company . Al ways include self - addressed and stamped en velope to ensure proper return of your material if it is found unacceptable .
Don't let the glamorous " big - name " publica tions be your sole goal . The bulk of their material is made by well - paid staff photographers and the competition for freelance photographers is high . Although the smaller magazines and newspapers

USE OF the foreground - background technique makes this shot of Red Square , Moscow , more dramatic and interesting to the viewer / reader .
HIRE local guides to save you time during your travels . Besides taking you around the area , he can serve as a model in some of your photos .

You must have good human interest pictures and with more dramatic sub ject content than that which the travel reader is used to seeing . If you are fortunate to travel to places " off the beaten track , " you will have the newness of the subject to help create sales interest .
If you travel to old and familiar places around the world you will have to dig deep for a new story or picture angle . It is not as difficult as it sounds so long as you carefully research the site and activities of the place you intend to visit in advance .
Picture postcards generate " ideas "
Part of my enroute travel routine is to examine picture postcards for basic picture ideas . I buy those that will later help supply me with reference picture - captioning information . For the same pur pose , I also bring home all local travel brochures , transportation and other tickets purchased .
From sufficient probing , a possible picture idea will usually come to light . Familiarization with the contents of the publications you intend sell ing will also bring forth possible picture subjects . Along with the travel magazines and travel sec- might not pay as well , you stand a better chance of selling material more often . More frequent sales to the same publication can result in you becoming a regular contributor , one whose work is looked or asked for between routine sales submissions .
If you can write as well as photograph your travel story , you are in a much better position to sell your photo . Selling the complete pack age of text and pictures works smoother than selling only the pictures to illustrate a story written by someone else .

You also have to write identification " cut lines " for the photos you plan to sell so , you are per forming 60 % of the job in order to produce sale able photos . Why not do the other 40 % text piece to accompany the pictures the additional money for both story and pictures .
It is worth the additional time and effort to become both travel writer and photographer . Even if you are not an accomplished writer , the publication will rewrite and smooth up your text .
Public interest in travel is growing
The easy inexpensive access to the far corners of the world via jetplane transportation has created a greater interest in the public to travel . The low income family of today can now readily enjoy the " rich man's " experiences of yesteryear . There fore , the public wants to know more and more

Submit story ideas to markets
Before each new trip , I work out several story ideas and present these to selected editors . My purpose is to exchange ideas , obtain editorial di rection and , hopefully obtain a " speculation type " of assignment . Never arrange for an editorial appointment to ask , " What can I do for you dur ing my travels ? " Have a positive approach and suggest story and picture possibilities you could do !
An editor is a very busy individual with count less details and deadlines in mind . The last thing he wants to do is to help you prepare a picture or story outline . However , if you show him a new picture story idea fully developed , you stand a good chance of selling it in advance of your trip .
If he really likes it , he will help you slant your story to fit his publication's style and , perhaps he will ask you to make several other single mis cellaneous shots during your travels . So , make it a point before your trip to sell your ideas but , only if you have developed a complete plan for the story and pictures .
