ELECTRONIC FLASH INDOORS
The technique of electronic flash indoors is much the same as working with tungsten light except that the duration of the light is only about 1 / 200th of a second or shorter . This short flash duration is an advantage in making the picture because it virtu ally eliminates camera or or subject movement and gives crisp , clean , sharp results .
Electronic flash is cool to work with , easier on the model and the pho tographer . It is balanced for use with daylight films , ( considered more true than tungsten emulsions ) . This also means the photographer can use the same film indoors and outdoors .
THIS SKETCH shows how three electronic flash units , the main light having an umbrella reflector , were used for the photograph at the right .
PLASTIC covered framework shown in use as a Japanese Shoji screen back ground in photo at left was illuminated from behind with bounced strobe for front light . Large umbrella - reflector strobe was used as main light for the photo opposite , with bounced fill - in .
The size of the electronic flash units will depend upon the size of the camera and the area to be lighted . The photographer lighting a portrait ,. for instance , can get by with the smallest units . A 35mm camera with a fast lens will also be an advantage because this permits the use of units with less light output .
On the other hand if 4x5 , 5x7 or 8x10 is to be used - or , for photo graphing larger areas such as full length glamour shots or entire rooms -larger speedlight units are requir ed . Three 800 - watt - second with two lamps for each powerpack and a 200 watt - second book unit for a hair light make an ideal setup .
A typical glamour lighting set - up might be two of the 800 - watt - second units with four lamps used on the background alone . The third 800 watt - second unit would be placed in front as the main light with one or two umbrella reflectors and the 200 W / S boom light used on the hair . Only the front light is connected to the camera shutter because the back ground lights and the hair light all fire by means of electric eye tubes which are triggered by the main light flash . The photocell system eliminates wires cluttering up the studio floor .
While electronic flash has its ad vantages , it is more expensive and cannot be seen as easily as tungsten . Most modern studio units , however , do have built - in modeling lights so that you are able to get an idea of what the lighting effect will be with the flash .
