Posing Your Model
THE HE FIRST TIME you work with a model , especially one who has little or no experience , can be trau matic . If she in fact , if both of you haven't the faintest ideas about pos ing you are going to have a difficult session that will be rather unsuccess ful . Because the professional model is experienced and can and will suggest poses , you will be better off working with such girls at the outset .
There are ways of becoming knowl edgeable about posing . The simplest ones are to save copies of mail order house catalogs such as Sears , Mont gomery Ward and Spiegel . They have hundreds upon hundreds of illustra tions which will give you posing ideas .
Then again , you can make up scrap books of photos of girls clipped from magazines and newspapers . But don't just make the books , study them and
when you go out on a shooting ses sion bring them along so you and your model can discuss and select poses that can be used .
There are a number of books avail able as well as a series of posing guides published by Peter Gowland . These will give you and your models thousands of posing ideas . With such guides you can build confidence in yourself and your model so that the shooting sessons will be productive .
It is always important to convey the impression to your model that you Know exactly what you are doing . Use the posing guides strictly as a refer ence for the model and yourself to show her what you want and then be ready to accept any suggestions she may make as to variations of the selected pose . When you can work to gether in harmony with the model your pictures will show more sponta neity and eye - appeal .
The general practice on a shooting session is to shoot up a roll or two of film - as a warmup , just as a pitcher warms up before a game . This gets you both in a relaxed mood and takes the edge off any tension that might exist . Usually you won't get anything worthwhile out of the pictures on the first roll - but , then again , you just might come up with some .
