Useful accessories
- I use many of the accessories illustrated on these pages to aid my close - up photography both out of doors and in the studio . Some , such as the striped cable release , plant clamp , filter wrench , filter holder , light meter , right - angle view finder and white Lastolite reflector , are kept permanently in my backpack which I use for carrying my equipment on lo cation . In addition , I also carry a set of watchmaker's screwdrivers , a lens clean ing brush , spare batteries for cameras and flash guns , glass filters in filter stacking caps and a pocket tape recorder.
When working on location I keep all my films - both exposed and unexposed in a double - layered cooler box with a freezer pack . If I cannot find a shady place for the cooler box , I cover it with layers of old sacks and boxes . In hot humid cli mates films should be kept as dry as poss ible , preferably by laying them on dry ( blue ) silica gel crystals in an airtight box .
In my automobile keep old plastic bags for kneeling on wet sand or boggy ground ; a large umbrella for protecting the camera and tripod during rain showers ; a pair of waders for walking out into rivers to photograph aquatic plants in mid stream ; and I find a pair of gardener's knee pads useful for protection on hard rocky ground.
If you are walking any distance out of doors you must find a convenient method of carrying all your equipment . When working only a short distance from the automobile , or any other base , I find a photographer's vest very useful for carry ing a limited number of lenses and accessories . When working on snow or a wet beach , or in water where it is imposs ible to put equipment down on the ground , a vest is invaluable . Everything comes easily to hand without having to return to base to change a lens or retrieve a forgotten filter . A shoulder bag with a single shoulder strap is not comfortable or practical when I am walking any dis tance over rough ground ; so I always use a backpack which cannot slip off my shoulders should I fall . Smaller packs attached to a belt are useful for carrying a basic kit including a camera with one lens , extension tubes , a cable release , films , filters and a piece of aluminum foil as a reflector . Some wide camera straps have elastic loops for holding up to three 35mm films . If you are doing a lot of tripod work , a camera strap can get in the way , so it is worth getting one with quick - release clips .
I have often found through bitter experience that it is the small item which proves to be crucial to achieving the desired picture . This is why I now use a fisherman's tackle box ( see p . 154 ) which is divided into compartments . This houses such essential items as multiple flash connectors , extension leads , slave units , inch to inch conversion inch conti bushing ( for converting a nental tripod socket on a camera to a 1 inch ) , flash ball and socket heads , lens socket heads , lens reversing ring , model ing clay , a pair of scissors , string , clear scotch tape , and 2 inch wide rolls of scotch tape in white and black for taping down anything from electric cables to flash extension leads .
Photographer's vest
This Bulldog vest has 15 pockets , including four large front ones , two of which are padded .
Ewa - cape rain cover ▷ This transparent PVC rain hood covers the camera completely . The lens flap folds back for photography .
Plant clamp A home - made clamp with two spikes one is pushed into the ground and the other steadies a stem .
Conspicuous cable release
I have lost many cable releases outside , so I now mark them with bands of colored scotch tape .
