Creative filters
Besides the more conventional filters which are used to improve the basic image ( see p . 40 ) , there are now a large number of special effect filters which alter the original image so drama tically that they totally falsify it . These filters can be brightly colored so as to produce a false color cast ; completely clear with lines which turn highlights into crosses or stars ; or they may be completely clear and have tiny grooves or facets which bend the light passing through them . False color filters come in many forms and they may be made up of one , two or three colors.
Clear glass filters which distort the image do so by diffusing or bending light . Diffusers pro duce a soft - focus image with muted colors ( this effect can also be achieved simply by breathing on the lens ) . Diffraction filters have a fine grid pattern of prismatic grooves etched . into their surface which dramatically bend points of light ( including highlights ) and split them into the colors of the spectrum .
The surface of multivision filters is cut into prismatic facets ; the number of facets deter mines how many times the identical image of the subject is repeated in the frame . Some filters multiply the image around a circle ( as with the rose on the right ) , while others repeat it in a linear way . The best effect appears when a light subject is photographed against a dark background using a large aperture .
Resist the temptation to over - use creative filters . The best results will be achieved by critically appraising the effect with and without such a filter and using it only when it enhances the basic image .
A rainbow effect
This spectral abstract was achieved by photographing water as it trickled over a rock . The highlights in the moving water were diffracted by the 1270 ultra - fine parallel grooves engraved in the rainbow spot filter I used . I rotated the filter and varied the lens aperture before deciding to open up to f3.5 which gave me a shutter speed of 1 / 2000th sec . Lens 55mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film x0.5 Mag . on page x2.5
Repeating the image ▷ To create this multiple image of an iceberg rose , I used a five faceted multivision filter ( see above ) . I carefully positioned the repeat images on the four compass points . Lens 55mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film × 0.2 Mag . on page × 1.2
