Tracks and signs
Tracks made by animals - notably birds and mammals provide intriguing subjects for close - up work which are exploited by few photographers . Birds and mammals leave con spicuous tracks as they walk , run or land on sand , mud or snow . Crabs , insects , amphibians and reptiles also leave behind evidence of their presence in soft ground . Look for tracks on the seashore , estuary , sand dune , lakeside , river bank and also in the garden . As bushmen well know , each track tells its own story , but it may last for only a few hours before being obliter ated by a rising tide , a river in flood , rain , or warm weather melting snow .
All impressions show up best if they can be taken against a low - angled light , since this will cast a shadow in the track . Try to select a simple track which is not confused by others criss - crossing over it . In popular areas you must get up early to find the best tracks , before children run over a beach or dogs are exer cised ; also the low , early morning light is ideal for photographing tracks .
As animals move around and feed they leave behind other signs as well , including the remains of food . For example , in coniferous woodlands eaten pine cones are discarded by gray squirrels . Remnants of snail shells beside rocks will show that a thrush has been at work . During the rutting season deer make scrapes in the ground and they may also fray saplings by rubbing their antlers against the bark .
Food remains such as cones , nuts and shells can easily be collected and kept for photography in the studio at a later date . Com parative studies can then be made of the way in which different animals attack the same kind of food . The objects can either be laid directly on a gray background and lit by indirect light inside a light tent ( see p . 154 ) , or placed on a piece of glass raised up from the background as used in shell and fossil photography .
Impressions in the sand
Shortly after the tide had ebbed down the shore , a herring gull walked over this stretch of wet , smooth sand . Lens Hasselblad 80mm +1.0 Proxar Mag . on film x0.15 Mag . on page * 0.3 ◄ Meanderings in a rock pool Marine snails made this intriguing pattern on the sandy floor of a rock pool . I used a polarizing filter on the lens to eliminate reflections ( see p . 40 ) . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 21mm extension Mag , on film × 0.2 Mag , on page × 0.3
A snail's feeding trail ▷ I found this curious track - made by a snail browsing on a green algal film - on a white gate in our garden . The white areas mark where the snail has rasped away at the algae . I took the picture with available light on an overcast day . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 21mm extension Mag , on film x0.25 Mag . on page × 0.5
A landing in the snow ▷ I was walking through woodland after a light snowfall in late fall when I saw a squirrel jump down out of a tree . This picture illustrates how a thin layer of snow on darker ground and subdued lighting conditions can produce an impression with a stronger contrast than usual . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 21mm extension Mag . on film × 0.25 Mag , on page × 0.8
A trek across the mud
The broad , webbed footprints of a swan walking across a muddy estuary are unmistakable . The impressions of these prints have been enhanced by taking them against the light . Lens Hasselblad 150mm + 10mm extension Mag , on film × 0.1 Mag . on page × 0.4
