Winter is a time of year when many photo graphers put away their equipment and ignore the pictorial opportunities of sunny wintry days . As the sun breaks through the mist there is a brief period before it melts the frosty rime which creates the frost fantasy close - ups . The sun makes the tiny ice crystals that coat the subject sparkle like miniature diamonds , and even if the air temperature is below freezing , the frost will begin to melt , so the best pictures usually have to be taken early in the day .
If there is no sun , a flash can be used to add highlights at any time of day . When taking close - ups of snow and ice , the overall im pression is inevitably one of a whitish image so that it becomes especially important to exploit what little color is present . Search for red fruits or even late blooms , where some of the color shows through its icy coating . Look also for patterns and designs which arise from the angular nature of the ice crystals building up layer upon layer .
As well as frost patterns , close - ups can be found in iced - up ponds . Freshly fallen leaves may be fused within the ice , or air bubbles trapped beneath an icy covering . Alternating periods of thawing and freezing melt snow and create in its place glass - like icicles .
Winter is a good time for taking pictures of the delicate tracery of bare twigs . Finding a beautiful twig pattern is not always easy , and even if the pattern is right , it is often difficult to separate it from a confused background . Working on a misty day will help to isolate the subject by providing a uniform , muted backcloth which blankets out any distracting and unattractive features .
Although a blanket of snow acts like a huge reflector , a tripod will still aid winter close - ups . However , be sure to position and adjust the legs with great care , since a careless tap against a branch or a twig can so easily shatter the fragile ice pattern that was to have been the subject .
Cold temperatures can present problems with cameras which have through - the - lens metering , since the battery power quickly drains away in the cold resulting in under exposed pictures . A separate light meter with a selenium cell , such as a Luna - six , will be much more reliable under these conditions . Cold can also numb fingers , and they will then have little control over the shutter release , so be sure to keep your hands warm .
Adding sparkle with flash A On a dull winter's morning I found this rose covered with hoar frost . The dark red petals provided a welcome splash of color in an otherwise white landscape . I decided to use a flash to give some additional sparkle , and also to help isolate the rose by creating a shadow in the distant , unlit background . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 32mm extension Mag . on film × 0.3 Mag . on page × 1.5
Geometrical ice shapes ▷ Fluctuating water levels alternating with periods of freezing created this striking abstract design in ice among reeds in a flooded water meadow . Since I could not walk out over the thin ice , I used a maci lens to give me a working distance of four feet . In the sub - zero temperatures , I used a soft release button ( see diagram on the right ) which screws into the cable release socket making it much easier to release the shutter with a gloved hand . Lens 105mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film × 0.1 Mag . on page × 0.5
Sunlit icicles
Driving down a narrow country lane banked by high walls of snow , I found these icicles that had formed as the snow drifts began slowly to melt . By digging my way into the snowy bank I was able to get the camera in behind the icicles so that the rays of the setting sun were reflected in them . Lens 55mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film * 0.12 Mag . on page × 0.4
Selecting the viewpoint ▷ I used a low camera angle to gain a contrasting background color to this frost - encrusted hogweed seed head The blue sky was further enhanced by using a polarizing filter . Within minutes of the sun striking the seed head , the frost began to fall away . Lens 55mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film × 0.25 Mag . on page × 0.6
