Arts and crafts
Art and crafts fairs help to revive interest in some of the old country crafts . Indeed , these fairs are good places at which to meet crafts men and to view their finished crafts . In our modern automated society , it is refreshing to find that there are still craftsmen who delight in using their hands to create beautiful or useful objects from natural materials .
Close - up photography is ideal for illustrating the intricacies of lace , stained glass , calligraphy and etching , and delicate gold and silver objects . Another approach for recording arts and crafts is to take a series of pictures illustrat ing craftsmen's hands at work . Only when you see the deftness of a basket maker's hands do you appreciate the complex manipulations required to create a basket . When the hands are moving very fast , or the available light level is low , the light will have to be boosted either by using photofloods or multiple flash heads . I find it preferable to watch a craftsman at work before I decide on the viewpoint and lighting . I may even make a preliminary visit before a photographic session to check out the avail able lighting and position of the electric outlets .
Tying a fly ▷ I used a pair of electronic flashes one directed in from behind the right hand and another filling in from the front left - for this close - up of a fly fisherman tying a fly . Lens Hasselblad 250mm + 56mm extension Mag . on film x0.2 Mag . on page × 2
Lighting lace
Lace like embroidery , is best lit using a single directional light source placed at 45 ° above the work ( as shown on the left ) . This angled lighting - either with a spotlight or a flash clearly picks out the individual stitches . A dark gray background is best for photographing white lace ; shadows can be seen on a white background , while a black background will not clearly define the lace edge . Silver or gold threads must lit separately by shining a second light onto a white reflector encircling the camera lens . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 55mm extension Mag . on film x0.7 Mag . on page x5
◄ Corn dolly
I placed an English corn dolly on a sheet of glass above a white board background . A piece of aluminum foil bounced the flash back onto the side of the dolly opposite to the flash so that it appears evenly lit against a shadowless background the shadow falls outside the field of view . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 21mm extension Mag . on film x0.3 Mag . on page × 0.5
Highlighting hands ▷ I used two portable floodlights to boost the light on the basket maker's agile hands . Lens Hasselblad 150mm + 1.0 Proxar Mag . on film × 0.2 Mag . on page × 0.3
