Facial features
At all ages , the human face provides a rich source for variable close - ups . With a standard lens and extension tubes , the subject - to - cam era distance is too short for taking candid facial features . Use a long - focus lens with extension or a medium ( 90mm or 105mm ) macro lens to increase the working distance and to gain a better perspective without any distortions .
For outdoor portraits , assess the natural lighting and , if necessary , control it with dif fusers or reflectors ( see p . 152 ) . Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows which may dramatize some faces ; otherwise use flash to balance it ( see p . 42 ) and to eliminate distracting shadows . Indoors , both the lighting and the background can be selected to enhance a posed face . Window light can often provide a simple , natural light source . If you are using continuous light sources , move them around the subject to see the way the light and shadow areas change even a silhouette can make an effective profile . When using flash , be sure to move it away from the lens , otherwise you may find the pupils appear red . So - called " red eye " occurs when the iris is wide open in dim light and the subject is looking directly into the camera so that the flash illuminates the retina at the back of the eye .
Improvized lighting
I had to double - rate 50 ASA tungsten light color film to photograph this old lady in her small living room . Concentration

Clowning expressions
Matto the clown can rapidly change the expression on his face . I took these three pictures during a session in which I maintained a regular rhythm as I wound on the film and released the shutter . Matto changed his face as I was winding on to take the next shot , therefore each expression was held only briefly . The face was lit by natural light , and a reflector filled in the shadows .
