Reflections
The problem when photographing shiny sur faces is how best to suppress unwanted reflections - by using indirect lighting , a dulling spray , or a polarizing filter . However , reflections can be used to make exciting close - ups . Polished automobile hub caps can provide creative reflected images . An animal will some times react curiously to its own reflection . I have seen a small bird aggressively attacking its reflection in an automobile mirror , believing it to be an intruder invading his territory . In the street , look out for the reflections of leaves , feathers or even garbage in puddles . Most photographers have taken beautiful pictures of a view mirrored in a still lake or pool , too few see exquisite miniatures created by a tiny plant or stick reflected in the water's surface . In the studio , water , mirrors or shiny metal can be used for photographing reflected subjects . The reflections can be distorted by making ripples on water , by using convex or concave mirrors , curvaceous glassware , or metal sheets that can be flexed into S - shapes .
A pair of mirrors , set up parallel to each other on either side of the subject , will produce repetitive reflections . The basis of a toy kaleidoscope is a triangular tube of mirrors which repeats images of colored fragments to produce exquisite repetitive patterns . You can make your own kaleidoscope by using a pair of front - silvered mirrors . Normal mirrors are silvered on the back , so they reflect from both the front and the back surface , creating a double image . The front - silvered mirrors are taped together so that they form a V - shaped trough . Changing the angle of the mirrors alters the number of reflective images ; for example , six repetitive images are produced with an angle of 60 ° . The object is placed at one end of the glass trough and photographed with the camera looking at it from the other to achieve a symmetrical pattern .
Distorted self - portrait
I used a polished electric kettle to reflect me with my camera for this bizarre portrait . The kettle was placed on the ground and I lay prone to take this hand held picture by natural light . Although I held the 55mm macro lens just a few inches away from the kettle , its convex surface has produced a wide angle - lens effect so that my arms and head as well as the sky and trees in the background are included . The extraordinary distortion has compressed my head and yet extended the grass and the lower half of the lens . Lens 55mm micro - Nikkor Mag . on film × 0.3 Mag . on page × 1.5
Perpetuating the image
I used two unframed mirrors to take this picture of a faceted glass paperweight and two glasses . The mirrors were clamped vertically so that they were parallel to each other and therefore reflected the glassware from one face to the other , making each successive image progressively smaller . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 1.0 Proxar Mag . on film × 0.15 Mag . on page × 0.6
