The problem when photographing shiny sur faces is how best to suppress unwanted reflections - by using indirect lighting , a dulling spray , or a polarizing filter . The reflections can be distorted by making ripples on water , by using convex or concave mirrors , curvaceous glassware , or metal sheets that can be flexed into S - shapes .

Although I held the 55mm macro lens just a few inches away from the kettle , its convex surface has produced a wide angle - lens effect so that my arms and head as well as the sky and trees in the background are included . Perpetuating the image
I used two unframed mirrors to take this picture of a faceted glass paperweight and two glasses . The mirrors were clamped vertically so that they were parallel to each other and therefore reflected the glassware from one face to the other , making each successive image progressively smaller .
