Making photograms
Photograms date back to the days of Fox Talbot , who called them photographic draw ings . A photogram is simply an image made without a camera by placing one or more objects in contact with light sensitive paper and exposing a point source of light onto it . After the paper has been processed , the image ap pears as a silhouette in reverse because all solid parts block light and so appear white , while any transparent and translucent parts appear black or as various shades of gray , depending on how much light passes through and fogs the paper .
If you have a darkroom , the easiest way to make a photogram is to use printing paper with the enlarger lamp as the light source and then develop and fix the paper in the normal way . You will achieve best results - particularly with three - dimensional subjects by stopping down the enlarger lens . When the light source is placed directly above the subject it will be precisely reproduced in a life - size outline , but if the light is moved to one side , or more than one light is used , or if the subject is raised up above the paper on a sheet of glass so the paper can be bent during the exposure , distorted images will result . Graphic images can be derived from photograms by using darkroom techniques such as copying on to negative film and solarization ( see p . 138 ) . Larger - than - life - size photograms can be made of small , finely branched or translucent subjects , such as leaves and feathers , by placing them on glass in the negative carrier . If color print paper such as Cibachrome is used , some exciting color photograms can be achieved .
Cut glass I laid a crystal sherry glass on its side on a sheet of printing paper beneath the enlarger as shown in the set - up above . The faceted glass bent the light rays from the enlarger to produce this range of tones . Mag . on print x1 Mag . on page × 1
An umbel
I picked up this fennel head umbel and immediately laid it on black and white printing paper beneath the enlarger . I then made a photogram print before the tiny flowers began to wilt . Mag on print x 1 Mag . on page * 0.5
Leaf mosaic ▷ I placed a spray of Japanese maple leaves on print paper beneath the enlarger . The photogram shows the relative position of each palmate leaf in this distinctive leaf mosaic . Note how only the base of the leaves overlap each other . Mag on print × 1 Mag on page × 0.3
Nylon net ▷ I created this abstract of colored nylon net by folding strips of red and green net at random between two sheets of glass which I bound together with scotch tape . In the dark room , I laid this glass sandwich on top of Cibachrome paper and exposed it for 25 sec . with the enlarger stopped down to f22 . Mag . on print × 1 Mag . on page × 1
