Fiber optics
For many years fiber optics , incorporated in endoscopes , have been used to examine and photograph inaccessible parts of industrial machinery , as well as human organs . Only recently have they become available as a con tinuous light source for close - up photography . They provide a powerful cold light for precise spotlighting of small static objects . Thousands of fibers are contained within a flexible arm which can be bent so as to strike the object at any angle . Some arms are self - supporting , while others have to be secured in a clamp .
Several fiber optic units are now available some are much more versatile than others . My own model - an Intralux Volpi -takes a 15 - volt , 150 - watt projector tungsten halogen lamp , has a variable light intensity control and a powerful cooling fan . When the light intensity is turned up , I can use daylight color film . An optional push - on focusing lens fitted onto the end of each arm provides an even more concentrated and intense light source . The color of the light can be changed by inserting a colored filter between the lamp and the base of the arms . Fiber optic units utilizing flash instead of a con tinuous light will also be available shortly .
Neat knitting
This is a small part of the repeating border pattern on a Peruvian alpaca wool dress . I tied a pair of fiber optics together so their combined beams shone onto the part of the dress beneath the camera . The alternating bands of white and brown wool made a very striking monochrome photographic print , which is reproduced here as a duotone . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 69mm bellows extension Mag . on film × 0.85 Mag . on page × 5
Watch interior
This clockwork watch was mounted on a copying stand , laid beneath the camera , and lit using two fiber optics . I viewed it through the camera as I moved the fiber optics around the watch and also altered their highlights by bending gooseneck stems . Finally I settled on placing them opposite each other . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 111mm bellows extension Mag . on film × 1.12 Mag . on page × 4
Highlighting a hallmark A The hallmark is the official impression of a British assay office . The letter and symbols stamped on gold or silver objects denote the location and date of the assay office . This hallmark was on the reverse of a silver Georgian salt spoon stamped in 1810 in London . I pressed it upside down into modeling clay and placed a collar of tracing paper around the spoon to act as a miniature diffuser for a pair of fiber optics . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 143mm bellows extension Mag . on film × 2 Mag . on page × 10
Grazing a fruit
I found this dried lotus lily fruit in a London florist . The ripe seeds had long since been dispersed , leaving behind the dark unlit holes which were arranged in a striking radial pattern . I decided to light the surface of the fruit by grazing ( see p . 50 ) a single fiber optic across it and I placed a piece of aluminum foil on the side of the fruit opposite to the fiber optic to ease the shadows . Lens Hasselblad 80mm + 32mm extension Mag . on film * 0.4 Mag . on page x1.2
